D’Angelo Honors Mike Brown, Eric Garner in Captivating ‘SNL’ Performance: Watch

By Kevin Rutherford

It’s not uncommon these days for a Saturday Night Live musical guest to make him or herself (or selves) part of the show by appearing in a sketch or two outside their two musical performances. D’Angelo, on the other hand, was unseen for all except about 10 minutes for his renditions of Black Messiah songs “Really Love” and “The Charade.”

But that doesn’t mean that he, much like Prince weeks before him, didn’t steal the show.

Instead the singer, fresh off the surprise release of Black Messiah after a nearly 15-year break between LPs, ran through a set equal parts funky, sexy and, with his latter performance, captivating.

Following its Spanish language intro, D’Angelo slid into “Really Love,” sidling up to the mic like some sort of Zorro, hat cocked to the side, conjuring notes out of thin air in his smooth falsetto. The slow-burning track saw him accompanied by a string section and delicately picked flamenco guitar, but the main attraction was the man making his first ever appearance on the show, somehow both parts imposing visage and warm, inviting presence.

The talk of Twitter was 1) How much “Really Love” was their jam (which, sure) and 2) D’Angelo’s look, and for his second song he changed it up, opting for a hooded, gloved look, breaking out the electric guitar for “The Charade.” The performance became his commentary on the police killings of Michael Brown and Eric Garner, his backing band The Vanguard wearing Black Lives Matter and I Can’t Breathe shirts, a chalk outline of a body behind him and seen even more clearly via overhead camera shots. After the extended, rollicking outro, the entire band, D’Angelo included, posed with heads down, fists raised.

D’Angelo’s performance comes after the surprise release of Black Messiah last month, his first album since 2000’s Voodoo. The album came out after many year-end lists had already been released, but The Village Voice‘s Pazz + Jop poll, which hits in January, ranked it the top album of 2014.

Mountain Dew Wins Best Super Bowl Song

By Scott T. Sterling

While a slew of major brands are all vying for attention with high-profile Super Bowl ads, it’s Mountain Dew that wins for the breakout song of lot with DJ A-Trak with Milo & Otis’ “Out the Speakers feat. Rich Kidz.”

It’s the appropriately high-energy track (think “Turn Down for What” and “Harlem Shake”) that propels the ad for Mountain Dew’s new beverage, Kickstart, which features an entire basement that comes to life and dances after three guys playing video games take a sip.

The ad also features a cameo from dancer Dominic “D-Trix” Sandoval, a popular YouTuber whose channel “theDOMINICshow” has over 2 million subscribers.

With the spot sure to be one of the most talked-about commercials of the game, don’t be surprised if “Out the Speakers” finds its way onto playlists and DJ sets long after the Super Bowl is over.

Check out the commercial above, and listen to a full-length version of the track below.

Watch Jimmy Fallon Lead a Drunken Singalong of ‘Piano Man’

There are some songs that are just known as drunken bar room staples—Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin'” and Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline” come to mind. Also up there is Billy Joel‘s “Piano Man,” which was evoked by Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon when we showed up to party at Marie’s Crisis Cafe, a gay bar in New York City’s West Village.

Watch Kip Moore Prank Dierks Bentley for Making Him Jump in a Freezing Lake

By Annie Reuter

Revenge is sweet. At least for Kip Moore it is.

Earlier this month, Dierks Bentley invited his Sounds of Summer tourmates Moore, Maddie & Tae and Canaan Smith to his favorite lake in Nashville for what would become a polar plunge. Moore was not fond of the idea of jumping in Nashville’s freezing Percy Priest Lake so he was waiting for his revenge.

In a video uploaded yesterday (Jan. 29), Moore confronts Bentley.

“It’s no secret. I had no idea about the prank. I’m a pansy when it comes to cold water and I hated every last bit of that s—t,” he says in the video. “So, we all know that Dierks Bentley loves Big White, his old Chevy truck that he’s been driving for years. I’ve decided to play a prank on Dierks to teach him not to mess with me for the rest of this tour because I’ll take the prank further.”

Related: Interview: Kip Moore Explains New Album Delay & Praises The Boss: ‘Springsteen Gave Me Hope’

Moore’s friends took to Big White while he was away on tour and promised Bentley that he’ll have “a big surprise” in the back of Big White and it won’t be pretty. Watch the prank unfold above.

While Moore made his payback on Bentley, the pranks likely aren’t over. Maybe Bentley should have named his tour the Summer of Pranks Tour.

Future’s DJ Spent 56 Days in Dubai Jail

By Ezra Marcus

A dream vacation for Future’s DJ Esco turned into a nightmare, after weed he’d purchased the night before in Amsterdam sent him to jail in Dubai for 56 days.

In an extensive interview with The Fader, Esco told the incredible, terrifying story of his imprisonment.

“We’re at the end of the Europe tour, and it’s my birthday, and we’re in Amsterdam, so we’re gonna celebrate! I got the weed,” Esco explained. “But I’m not trying to walk around with all this weed, you feel me? I was not intentionally trying to bring weed to Abu Dhabi. And if I would have known the rules and laws they got over there, I would have quadruple checked my bag and made sure there wasn’t a piece of weed. I swear I would have.”

The trouble started when a police officer accosted him for filming in the airport, and then demanded to check his bags. He said the officers found weed, though Esco claimed he didn’t know it was in there—though still, he figured he’d just be sent back on the plane, no problem.

Related: Future Teams with Zaytoven for New Mixtape ‘Beast Mode': Listen

That’s not what happened. Esco ended up in jail, denied even a lawyer for weeks. Things only changed after he managed to befriend the prison warden.

“To make a long story short, the warden blessed me,” he added. “He took a liking to me, taught me some things about Islam and we ended up growing our own relationship. He’s the one who ended up helping me when my lawyer told me it might be six months, a year, or four years… The warden came in and he was like, ‘It’s not in my job description and I really don’t care about your case, but I’ve come to like you as a person. I’m not supposed to do this, but I’m going to call your prosecutor.’ I couldn’t even get the U.S. Embassy to call the prosecutor!”

After his release, Esco posted an Instagram from the airport.

Ah, sweet freedom.

Bentley, Thomas Rhett and the Cadillac Three enjoyed a beer infused plane ride last night (Jan. 27) before heading to Bentley’s bar and restaurant Whiskey Row. While driving around the city, Bentley also posted a video as he heard his new single “Say You Do” on the radio.

Sounds like a good party leading up to the big game.

Fans can still purchase tickets to The Night Before on Ticketmaster. Bentley will also be hosting a Super Bowl party on Jan. 30 at his bar and leading up to Sunday’s game, Big & Rich will perform on Feb. 1.
