What does Beyoncé Feminism look like? The cover for Beyonce in Formation offers clues

Slated for publication in the fall, Beyoncé in Formation draws cultural analysis from the singer’s iconic single “Lemonade.” Woven with candid observations about her life, Tinsley’s “Femme-onade” mixtape explores myriad facets of black women’s sexuality and gender. She analyzes Beyoncé’s “Don’t Hurt Yourself” through the lens of black feminist critiques, “Daddy Lessons” through models of motherhood, and finally “Formation” through its groundbreaking take on gender and sexuality. Activists and artists (including Loretta Lynn) contribute to Tinsley’s book, infusing it with fascinating interpretations of Queen Bey’s provocative, peerless imagery and lyrics.

“Every year, lines of black women and queers approach me on the first day to express excitement that they’re in a class that takes Beyoncé seriously — that someone is reflecting back that the lyrics they sing, the songs they dance to, their shirts that proclaim ‘I Slay’ just might be the meaningful sources of empowerment they always felt them to be,” Tinsley tells EW. “Greeting this receiving line of feminist Beyoncé fans, I see clearly: I’m one of thousands of black people living in the South looking to Beyoncé as a gilded mirror, an artist with the capacity to bounce light off our visions for next-millennium feminism. … This small offering is made in the hope that what starts in our black woman-loving, lemonade-making, hater-twirling Texas can change the world.”

The night Beyoncé stood up in front of a brightly lit sign that declared her a FEMINIST at the 2014 VMAs was transformational not only for Mock but for millions of black women. You could say Beyoncé’s feminist self-declaration broke the internet—but you could also say the internet was temporarily fixed. Because for twenty years before that performance, the words most often associated with feminist were militant, radical, man-hating. But for two days after, the word most associated with feminist online was Beyoncé. This means a generation of young women are growing up with something we’ve never seen before: an image of feminism that’s overwhelmingly popular and undeniably black. And that’s something all feminists should pay attention to. Janell Hobson rightly asks: “What, specifically, does this moment in popular culture mean for a younger generation of women who have been raised to be suspicious of feminism?” Obviously, Beyoncé’s popularization of the term feminist is in no way, shape, or form a solid enough foundation to build a next generation of black feminism on. Holding out feminism as something accessible for black women—a tool that can serve us, a light that can spark fires—is a beginning, not an end. Beyoncé has offered this word to a generation of black women and girls to claim, rework, and rethink in ways that work for us. This is the charge I give students on the first day of [my class] Beyoncé Feminism, and this is the charge I take on in this book: to use Beyoncé’s music as a starting point to think through personal and political issues that matter in our lives as twenty-first-century black feminists.

How Taylor Swift's New Music Video References Joe Alwyn With One Subtle Detail

“Delicate” already has an official music video — it’s got a snappy 78 million views on YouTube to boot — but Swift is now leaning into streaming platforms, releasing a Spotify-only vertical video that plays on mobile within the app. Shot like an extended selfie in a single take, with Swift spinning around in a meadow in a wintry forest, it’s a lo-fi, stripped-down approach. But zoom in closely, and the singer provides certain clues about her relationship with British actor Joe Alwyn.

It’s all in the details, of course. Swift wears a warm coat, her signature red lipstick, and her hair cut in shaggy bangs. Around her neck, however, is a simple necklace. And engraved on the necklace is the initial “J” likely for Joe.

The two have been seeing each other since at least the summer of 2017, although they mostly keep their relationship out of the spotlight. The necklace also echoes a line in one of her other Reputation songs, “Call It What You Want.” On that track, she sings, “I want to wear his initial / On a chain round my neck.” One thing you can always count on Swift for: her songwriting really is a mirror to her reality.

Anna Kendrick Reunites with Pitch Perfect Cast for Bella Birthday Surprise

Kelley Jakle threw Pitch Perfect costar Chrissie Fit the ultimate birthday surprise on Thursday, by gathering up Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson together for a Bellas-themed bash!

The stars of the hit film franchise all reunited to celebrate Fit, who turns 33 on April 3.

Along with friends and fellow actresses Leah Magwood and Cyrina Fiallo, the group spent the evening taking in some magic tricks — with Fit sharing video on her Instagram Stories.

They also took a group shot, which Kendrick, Fit, and Jakle all shared on Instagram.

Muthahf—– MAGIC!” Kendrick captioned her post, the photo showing the women posing around a card table with Fit dead center, wearing a tiara.

“What, you think we can just reveal our tricks?” Jakle, 28, wrote. “Just kidding. We have zero tricks and our brains hurt from being fooled. Thank you magic geniuses (you know who you are) and we love you @chrissiefit!!”

The ladies of Pitch Perfect have remained close since the franchise kicked off back in 2012.

Back in May, months before Pitch Perfect 3 hit theaters, the cast — including Brittany Snow, Anna Camp, and Shelley Regner — even took a girls trip together to Mexico.

We love each other so much, we had to go on holiday,” Wilson, 38, explained on Instagram at the time while sipping margaritas and posing for sunset selfies on the beach with her buds.

So does that mean another Pitch Perfect movie is on the horizon? If it was up to Kendrick, they would never end!

The actress, 32, sat down with PEOPLE’s editor-in-chief Jess Cagle in December for the latest edition of The Jess Cagle Interview (streaming now on People TV) to discuss the “Farewell Tour” installment, saying she’s open to the possibility of more films.

“If it were up to me we would hang out all the time,” says Kendrick.

But Kendrick says she’s also come to terms with Pitch Perfect 3 is the last time she sings alongside the Barden Bellas.

“It certainly does feel like it’s the finale,” she says. “We are all at peace with the idea that it would make sense if this was the last one.”

Cardi B Seemingly Details Offset's Alleged Infidelity in New Single 'Be Careful'

After releasing “Be Careful,” a new single off her hotly anticipated debut album Invasion of Privacy, which comes out next week, fans quickly speculated that the 25-year-old rapper’s latest tune was about her fiancé Offset, who was rumored to have had an affair and made a sex tape with another woman in January.

In the song, Cardi raps and sings about a man who decided to “creep and s—” after she “poured my whole heart” out.

“Man, I thought you would’ve learned your lesson ‘bout liking pictures, not returning texts,” she said in the song, adding, “I coulda did what you did to me a few times, but that’s not my M.O.”

Continuing, she went on to say, “Be careful with me. Yeah, it’s not a threat, it’s a warning,” explaining that “you might have a fortune, but you lose me, you still gon’ be misfortunate.”

Although Offset never confirmed or denied the allegations, the “Bartier Cardi” rapper responded to fans at the time saying, “No, it’s not right… But what you want me to do? Start all over again and get cheated on again?”

Elaborating on her decision to stay with Offset, the 25-year-old told Cosmopolitan that her reasons had nothing to do with self-esteem issues.

I don’t have low self-esteem,” she said. “I know I look good. I know I’m rich, I know I’m talented. I know I could get any man I want — any basketball player, football player. But I want to work out my s— with my man, and I don’t got to explain why.”

Continuing, she said, “I’m not your property. This is my life…. I’m going to take my time, and I’m going to decide on my decision… It’s not right, what he f—ing did — but people don’t know what I did, ’cause I ain’t no angel.”

But in the months since the cheating rumors, the “Bodak Yellow” star hasn’t been shy about letting everybody know the pair’s wedding is still on.

“It’s gonna be extravagant. You know, we’re both rappers,” she told PEOPLE at the Grammy Awards “We’re both artists, so it has to be a very extravagant wedding.”

Lorde Covers Her 'Idol' Kanye West Songs in the Most Appropriate Place

by singing a capella covers of his songs, “Love Lockdown” and “Runaway” on Tuesday night.

The New Zealand pop singer, who’s currently on her Melodrama tour following her album of the same name, gave a shoutout to West and Chi-town’s residents before launching into her covers.

“Thanks Chicago! It must be nice to come from the same place as Kanye West,” she said.

The two artists are friendly, having collaborated on a remix of “Yellow Flicker Beat” together in 2014. Lorde has also said that West is her “idol” and was one of the celebrities in attendance at his Yeezy Season 2 presentation.

Steven Spielberg on the Glories and Limits of Nostalgia in Ready Player One

The Temptations’ 1971 hit “Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me),” one of the most wistful love songs of its era. It’s a reverie about falling in love at first sight and fast-forwarding through the amazing life the two of you could have together–if only it could be real. The singers run through an intoxicating set of romantic possibilities, eventually settling on a sobering verdict: “It was just my imagination, running away with me.”

The human longing the Temptations sang about predates 1971–not to mention 2018–by thousands of years. But the song finds new life in Steven Spielberg’s ambitious, sweet-spirited Ready Player One. It’s a futuristic adventure-romance about Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan), a teenager stuck in depressed and depressing 2045 Columbus, Ohio, who lives the life of his dreams in a virtual-reality playground known as the OASIS. There, he’s not a perpetually put-upon kid, one who was orphaned at a young age and packed off to live with relatives; in the OASIS, he becomes the alter ego he’s created for himself, a heroic, blue-eyed model of James Dean coolness named Parzival, so electric with virtual life that even his skin seems to be traced with a network of living jewels. The movie’s action shifts between the stylized bleak reality of Wade’s world and the glistening, polychrome fantasy universe–created with CGI–in which, just by donning a pair of goggles, Wade becomes a swain who’s brave and groovy in all the ways he feels, in real life, he is not.

Wade/Parzival has friends in this otherworld, people whom he doesn’t know in real life, like the wisecracking warrior Aech (Lena Waithe). And he falls in love there too, with a girl so cool she’s even out of Parzival’s league, let alone Wade’s: Art3mis (Olivia Cooke) is a quick-witted minx with a punky red shag haircut. When Parzival finally gets up the nerve to have a real conversation with her, it’s the Temptations you hear deep in the background, their zephyr-like harmonies serving as both benediction and warning: breathe too hard, and even this imaginary reality might shatter.

The song may be old, but Spielberg’s use of it is modern. In his hands, Ready Player One, based on Ernest Cline’s popular 2011 gamer-fantasy novel, is a riff on both the glories and the limits of nostalgia–and it comes bound with the bittersweet acknowledgment that one man’s cherished cultural nostalgia is likely to be a much younger man’s casual Google search. Spielberg is one of Hollywood’s consummate craftsmen and the ultimate genre polymath. In the course of a career spanning close to 50 years, he made a fake shark seem terrifyingly real, rendered a hall-of-Presidents figure as a flesh-and-blood being and pondered the possibility of friendly visitors from other galaxies. And even if some of his most well-loved movies–like the Indiana Jones pictures–riff on the pop culture of eras past, he’s not so much a peddler of nostalgia as the kind of guy who makes movies that, in the years ahead, inspire nostalgia themselves. A generation of kids has already grown up with the tender and inventive child’s fantasy E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, which Spielberg made in 1982. Now, even most millennials are probably too young to feel sentimental yearning for it.

So if there’s anyone qualified to riff on nostalgia, it’s Spielberg. “Nostalgia does not have eternal life,” the director tells me. “I use nostalgia when I’m in a bad situation, when I’m feeling stressed, or when the world is an ugly place to read about or to watch on television. I use nostalgia to escape. But my own kids are not nostalgic in the same way. They’re nostalgic if something is trending. And then they’ll go back and look it up and learn about something that happened a long time ago.” He’s realistic, in a cheerful way, about the fate of older folks’ treasured cultural totems: “Social media is keeping people pretty much focused on the present,” he says. “Social media may be the beta blocker to nostalgia.”

Like its source material, Ready Player One–adapted by Cline and Zak Penn–is packed with cultural references from the 20th century, and from the 1980s in particular. King Kong, the climactic dance sequence of Saturday Night Fever, Van Halen’s “Jump,” the Iron Giant: if you’ve watched a movie or even just sifted through Spotify anytime in the past 90 years, you’re sure to recognize something. But you don’t have to get all, or even any, of the references to enjoy the movie. Spielberg purposely constructed Ready Player One so that “the story is straight ahead out your front windshield, and the nostalgia, if you care to glance at it, is out the right and the left windows of this vehicle we’ve put you in, the one that’s racing you to the finish line,” he says. “The nostalgia is there if it has some value for you, but nostalgia is not essential in understanding the story we’re telling.”

In recent years the word storytelling has become the kind of stock term you need to put air quotes around, part of the lingo of podcasters, performance artists and tattooed-and-bearded marketing guys alike. But for Spielberg, the idea of telling a great story means something much more primal, and it’s bound tight with conveying visual information in the clearest possible way. Ready Player One is a vision of a possible dystopian future, but one that comes with its own means of escape via technology. The OASIS began as a noble experiment–its inventor is a reclusive, soft-spoken sweetheart-slash-genius, James Halliday (played, with incandescent guilelessness, by Mark Rylance)–but it has since become corrupted by corporate greed, embodied by the movie’s biggest villain, Nolan Sorrento (Ben Mendelsohn). He’s a symbol of the way Big Business can contaminate ideas that begin with the best intentions.

The plot of Ready Player One involves dozens of crisscrossing threads, not to mention two visually disparate worlds. But Spielberg keeps everything moving smoothly, particularly the action scenes–they’re rendered with the kind of clear visual organization and precision that so many younger filmmakers, raised on the sloppier language of fast, jumbled cutting, haven’t bothered to master. In one of the grandest sequences, a drag race that’s like a dream reimagining of the one in Rebel Without a Cause (set in a splendid dream version of New York), Spielberg never leaves any doubt as to which car is coming from where. He takes great care in drawing a clear line telling the audience, visually, where the race starts and where it ends. “In all of my movies where there are action set pieces, the last thing I want the audience to do is get lost,” Spielberg says. “For me it’s essential that the audience is clear about who’s chasing and who’s being chased. Up from down, left from right. When the audience doesn’t have to worry about geography, it releases them to get involved in what the action is supposed to be telling us.” And that, for Spielberg, is key, a position he defends with a kind of gentle ruthlessness. “Storytelling is the most important aspect of anything I’ve ever done. It’s how the story is told–that’s all I’ve really focused on. If something doesn’t tell a story or if it’s confusing, I either don’t shoot it or I cut it out.”

Spielberg loves technology, and he loves using new techniques to tell stories. But he’s also wedded to the basics of classic filmmaking. He’ll use CGI wherever it’s needed–and it was needed a lot in a movie like Ready Player One–but generally speaking, if he has a choice between using a real set and a painted one that means “all the actors have to do is stand in front of a blue screen,” his preference is clear. “I love using real sets,” he says. “Half this movie is using real sets.”

In the end, as dazzling as the OASIS is, Spielberg knows which world he prefers. “There’s really no substitute for being in the world we were born into,” he says. But who doesn’t yearn for occasional escape from our grim daily battles, or even just from the headlines? The OASIS, as envisaged first by Cline and now by Spielberg–a place where the color of a person’s skin, or some strict definition of gender, age or wealth, isn’t the first thing you notice about them–is a model of the utopian imagination. Nostalgia has its uses. But why wish for a lost era, when you could instead be wishing a new one into being?

Rolling Stones’ Ronnie Wood shares health update after cancer scare

 

The Rolling Stones‘ guitarist Ronnie Wood has revealed that he is now cancer-free after having a health scare last year.

Last year, the rock icon revealed that he had prepared to “say goodbye” to his loved ones before he underwent five hours of surgery to remove cancer from one of his lungs. Now, he’s spoken about life having been given the all clear.

“I had three months of check-ups and it was all clear and they said ‘go and enjoy life’,” Wood told Metro.

Addressing previous stories that he turned down chemotherapy in order to keep his hair, Wood continued: “If your body is riddled with cancer, it’s a losing cause. Luckily, all mine was contained within the left lung and I was fortunate enough to get shot of it, bang.

“There was none in the rest of my body so I didn’t require chemo.”

However, Wood did admit that he wouldn’t have changed any of the excesses that he enjoyed in the past. 

“Not even smoking for England for over 50 years — it was a wonder I wasn’t riddled with cancer in both lungs,” he said. “It’s a wonder they both didn’t explode.”

Asked about what advice he’d give to anyone battling cancer, he urged them to “stay positive and stay strong”.

“I’ve had a great life and I was all ready to go,” he added. “Wow! I didn’t know I was going to be given the ticket to last this long. What a reprieve.”

Watch James Bay perform an acoustic version of new single 'Us' a day before the single's release

but EW has an exclusive listen — and look — at an acoustic version of the song right now.

Though the guitar-led track is more mellow than up-tempo second single “Pink Lemonade” and electro-inspired album lead “Wild Love,” its smooth lyrics and sultry notes fit well into the singer’s oeuvre. “I believe in something, I believe in us,” sings Bay, which is reminiscent of his work on his debut Chaos and the Calm.

“I’ve been lucky enough to meet people all over the world and witness the phenomenal strength of crowds,” Bay tells EW. “I wrote this song to explore unity and inclusion. Looking through the lens of my own personal relationships, this song turned out to be a particularly important moment on the album for me.”

The “Let It Go” singer previously announced the release of his upcoming album Electric Light on May 18 (pre-order it here), as well as the expansion of his North American and European tour, adding nearly 30 new dates. The run will take Bay across North America and Europe, making stops at New York’s Beacon Theater on Sept. 18 and Los Angeles’ Greek Theater on Oct. 7.

Dawson's Creek reunion: Could there be a reboot?

there’s a good chance a reboot has been discussed.

Dawson’s Creek ended in 2003 but fans have often wondered whether this show could return in some form. In the finale, Jen (Michelle Williams) passed away from a heart attack but her daughter is being raised by Jack (Kerr Smith) and Doug (Dylan Neal). Dawson (James Van Der Beek) finally got to meet his idol, Steven Spielberg, and Joey (Katie Holmes) and Pacey (Joshua Jackson) were living a happy life together in New York City.

So could the cast see a reason to return to Capeside? “It would have to be a reinvention of sorts,” says Van Der Beek. Adds Holmes, “What I love about this show is that it existed at a time pre-social media, pre-internet, and it was nostalgic when we were shooting it. So I really like it where it is, to be honest.”

The Darkest Minds trailer: Amandla Stenberg literally has the power to fight back

The first trailer for The Darkest Minds showcases YA movie star Amandla Stenberg in a dystopian world based on the bestselling novel by Alexandra Bracken. It’s a world where the majority of children died in a plague, while the ones who survived emerged with superhuman abilities.

Teens are therefore rounded up into camps and treated as threats to the state — and Ruby (Stenberg) is one of the most powerful of them all. “I will fight for all of us,” she says, thrusting her hand into the air as she leads a rebellion.

“Why does [the plague] take out kids? What is this thing? How do you cure it?” director Jennifer Yuh Nelson told EW. “How do you fight it? Do you want to fight it? All these things are, I think, a metaphor in many ways for how kids can feel, or even adults can feel, like outsiders in their own selves. They don’t know how to find a place in the world. How to find a self-acceptance?”

Ruby is classified as “orange” by the government, meaning she can control people’s minds. She breaks free from her internment camp and goes on the run with a band of other enhanced individuals. There’s “blue” Liam (Harris Dickinson), who can move things with his mind; “green” Chubs (Skylan Brooks), who’s highly intelligent; and “yellow” Zu (Miya Cech), who has an affinity for electricity. There’s one other color-coded super-teen we see in the trailer: “red” for fire starters.

“Ruby’s a pretty normal kid before the plague hits. She has a very loving relationship with both of her parents. But, when it hits, something happens at her own hands that greatly changes her life,” Stenberg, who’ll also be seen in the politically charged YA film The Hate U Give, explained to EW. “Like all of the other kids, she is placed in a camp. And, she’s placed in Camp Thurmond, where the kids are forced to mundane activities like make boots and are just really mistreated.”

Shawn Levy (Stranger Things) and Dan Levine (Arrival) produce The Darkest Minds, which is based on a screenplay by Chad Hodge (Good Behavior).

The film will open in theaters on Aug. 3.

Watch The Handmaid's Tale season 2's harrowing new trailer

So begins this rather harrowing trailer for The Handmaid’s Tale‘s second season, and so too do all the other questions that go along with an adventure in Gilead.

When we left Offred/June (Elisabeth Moss) at the end of the first, acclaimed season, things had concluded much in the same way as the classic 1985 novel by Margaret Atwood: with her taking a literal leap of faith into the back of a van, heading towards punishment or freedom. This next season starts to expand beyond Atwood’s novel, with much of the 13-episode season focusing on June’s pregnancy and her struggle to find her daughter. But! Hear New Orleans rapper Pell's latest track 'Queso' -- exclusive premiere

“I’ve been going through a lot of transition,” he tells EW. “LIMBO is really about being somewhere between here and there.” Pell is referring to the record’s themes of anxiety, isolation, and existential uncertainty, but when EW connects with the rapper by phone, he’s in a more literal sort of limbo.

“I’m Ubering around L.A.,” he quips after directing his driver to park behind a Minicooper (“I haven’t seen one of those in a minute!”) and explaining how to find him online (“P-E-L-L. Like the scholastic grant.”). “I’m spreading my music from Uber to Uber. From sea to shining… yeah, OK. Nevermind. Not that joke.”

Pell has reason to be in good spirits. His latest mixtape, last year’s Floating While Dreaming, put him on the national hip-hop community’s radar, and LIMBO — much of which is produced by TV On the Radio’s Dave Sitek — refines his sound even further. Plus, he adds, he just moved to L.A. and has “had somewhat of an interesting love life the past eight months — like I had my first serious girlfriend.”

His still-strong romance inspired one of LIMBO‘s tracks in particular, the ebullient “Queso,” which EW premieres below. “I feel like the time leading up to us officially dating, it was actually a situation where I was courting [her],” he says. “I’m old-fashioned, because my mom raised me to be. But it’s like, I had everything at my disposal! I had girls saying s–t and whatnot, like any other rapper or any other person that’s pursuing this life. And sometimes that’s not the most fulfilling thing. The only person you want to call is the one person who probably won’t answer. Essentially, this is me, personifying that in a song.”

The 49-year-old actress —who announced her separation from actor Justin Theroux, 46, in February — is making her first public appearance since the news at WE Day California on April 19, PEOPLE confirms exclusively.

Aniston will be joined onstage at The Forum in Inglewood by pal Selena Gomez, Morgan Freeman, Lily Collins, March for Our Lives organizers Jackie Corin and Cameron Kasky, Dierks Bentley and more at the event, which will be hosted by John Stamos and Jenna Ortega.

Serena Williams is more than a tennis player – in fact, she’s many things to many people. Those different facets of her identity are under the microscope in the teaser trailer for the new HBO docu-series, Being Serena.

The tennis legend opens up her life to fans in the new five-part series, giving an intimate look at her pregnancy and the aftermath. Williams had previously revealed in an essay for CNN opinion that she nearly died after giving birth to her daughter, Alexis Olympia.

“I put so much pressure on myself. I wanna make sure that I’m the best,” Williams says in the trailer, amidst images of herself training, making business decisions for her brand, her wedding to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, and spending time with her new baby.

Though Williams admits she thought to herself, “How am I going to play?” after becoming pregnant, she shows no sign of giving up – she recently competed in the Miami Open. “I don’t know if there’s anything left for me in tennis,” she says, referring to her record-breaking number of Grand Slam wins and Olympic medals. Still, she adds: “But I’m not done yet.”

John Cena is ready to make you forget he's John Cena

“When someone looks at me, you check off a box like, ‘Oh, I know where this person fits,’” says the 40-year-old wrestler-turned actor. “I’m 250 pounds, so I get it.”

But with films like the raunchy new comedy Blockers, which opens April 6, Cena hopes he can begin to shed the perception that comes with being, well, John Cena. “It’s been a work in progress, but I understand why,” he admits. “You play a character for so long and people have no other choice than to see you as that character. So that unwinding process takes a long time. But it’s fun to be able to make people forget that.”

Cena’s acting career may just now be on the rise, but he’s long been a star in his own right. The 13-time WWE Champion has been the face of wrestling for more than a decade. Following the successful transition of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and looking to capitalize on Cena’s popularity, WWE Studios built two action films around Cena: 2006’s The Marine and 2009’s 12 Rounds. Both were critical and commercial failures that almost ended Cena’s big screen career as quickly as it began.

“It was kind of a realization of, ‘I love what I do in the WWE, I have tried being the person people think I am and failing in a cinematic sense,’” he shares. “So around 2009, it’s like, ‘I’m not ever doing movies again.’ And I was okay with that.”

So after two swings and misses, Cena turned his focus back to wrestling and new gigs, including hosting reality TV and awards shows (his work at the ESPYs is what sold Blockers director Kay Cannon on his comedic abilities). But then in 2015, he fully reemerged in a big — and naked — way in Judd Apatow’s Trainwreck. He proved to be a surprise scene-stealer as an emotional, closeted guy who Amy Schumer’s character hooks up with. Later that year, his new foray into comedies successfully continued with supporting roles in Sisters and Daddy’s Home.

“I was kind of just put in the movie mix before as a furthering of a business model — which I get,” he admits. “This was a conscious choice to be like, ‘I just read this, it’s awesome, I’d like to do it.’ So finding something I’m as passionate about as WWE, I know I’m going to at least have fun with the process and be proud of the thing I see on screen, whether people buy tickets to it or not. I don’t just have to do it, I like to do it.”

And now with Blockers, Cena takes on his largest comedic role yet, playing one of the adult leads alongside Leslie Mann and Ike Barinholtz. The trio star in the R-rated comedy as parents determined to prevent their daughters from losing their virginity on prom night.

While making it clear it wasn’t a conscious decision, Cena believes this is the latest progression of people not seeing him as “the wrestler guy.” “It’s still not an entire picture rotating around a world that is John Cena,” he points out. “It’s easing into, ‘Okay, I saw him at the end of Daddy’s Home, he was a drug dealer in Sisters, and he had that crazy scene in Trainwreck, and now he’s doing more things as a dad in Blockers.’ So I think maybe that’s helped people digest it a little bit easier.”

Blockers does serve as an important step for Cena. Whereas his past roles have leaned heavily on his powerful physique and presence, that’s not the case here. Cena stars as Mitchell, a regular dad who just happens to look like John Cena. Well, a regular dad who will do anything to track down his daughter, even if it means chugging beer through his butt. In the film’s most laugh-out-loud scene, the only way for the parents to infiltrate a prom party is for Mitchell to drop his pants and beat a teenager in a backside drinking contest.

“So I’m thinking, ‘What can I do to make myself not be that guy everyone sees? I’ll drink a beer through my butt!’” jokes Cena. “That was more uncomfortable for everyone else than it was for me. That scene survived every script rewrite, so I’ve talked myself into being cool with it before we’re even in it. And I think everyone else was not cool with it. Because keep in mind, it’s at a prom party, so we’ve got 150 extras staring into my abyss as we’re doing this thing, not to mention Ike and Leslie. But I think it was me being cool with it that helped everybody else have fun and laugh at it. I’m certainly not afraid to laugh at myself.”

Referencing his memorable bare-it-all scene in Trainwreck, Cena cracks (pun intended), “I guess when you start so naked you’re good! That did help. The ability to be very scantily clad on set for an entire shooting day, you just get over it. This is funny, everyone is laughing, so let’s see how far we can go.”

Where Cena will go next is to the Transformers franchise for a key role in the Bumblebee spin-off and back into the ring for as long as he can. Cena may have followed Johnson to Hollywood, but, unlike the Fast & Furious star, he’s not ready to leave behind the sport that put him on the map (Cena previously called out Johnson for doing so, before later apologizing).

“This is the best way for me to explain it: it is my home, it is my family,” he passionately declares of the WWE. “I have spent 41 years on this planet and 16 of them in the WWE. I see some of our audience members more than I see my family. It’s dependent on physical health and time, and I know that my days are numbered, so I’ve always appreciated every moment, but I’m really at a point where I appreciate and savor every single second that I’m out there.”

Coincidentally, filmgoers are beginning to feel the same way.

American Idol Contestant Auditions with Katy Perry's 'I Kissed a Girl' — Does the Risk Pay Off?

Contestant Caitlin Lucia took a major risk while auditioning for the rebooted competition show, opting to sing a cover of judge Katy Perry‘s hit single “I Kissed a Girl.”

After telling the 33-year-old pop star that she was one of her biggest musical influences and that they both started out performing at Los Angeles’ Hotel Café, Lucia broke into an acoustic rendition of the 2008 track on her guitar.

Although Perry was a bit skeptical to begin with, it was soon apparent that she was thoroughly impressed by the Idol hopeful.

“Well, usually I say to a contestant that’s singing my song, ‘At least sing it as good as or better [than me],’ and I think she might have sang it better,” Perry said.

Relieved, Lucia replied, “I literally thought you were going to eat me alive.”

Both Perry and fellow judge Lionel Richie agreed that they loved the spin she put on the tune and believed that she had more talent to unveil.

“I think you’ve got a bigger motor than you’re showing us,” Perry told her.

Richie added, “We can hear it. You’re just cruising along, touching the top, and there’s more after that top. I know it is.”

Luke Bryan was also stunned, complimenting the “complete control” Lucia had over her voice.

The “Swish, Swish” singer even made her an amazing offer: “Want to come sing it at my show? Come on.”

“Hell yeah!” Lucia responded.

When it came time to vote if Lucia should move on to the Hollywood rounds, it wasn’t just a “yes” — it was an “absolute yes” from all three judges.

While they were in agreement on this contestant, things may get heated between the judges as the competition narrows down.

“We start out with 200 some odd people, let’s be honest. We took off the top layer and we also had our get-acquainted moment which is like, ‘That’s nice. Very good, don’t do that again,'” Richie, 68, told PEOPLE. “So now we’re in the second layer. As we get closer to the real deal I can almost feel that we’re going to be able to voice our opinions – I’m bringing my mace!”

“You’re going to mace us?” Bryan, 41, replied. “Don’t let him go through your pocketbook, Nicole [Richie], and get your pepper spray.”

“We’ll each have different people that we’re rooting for I’m sure,” Perry added. “But the great thing is that America is really the one that chooses so that’s exciting.”

Fugazi have been secretly playing music together

 

Fugazi bassist Joe Lally has revealed that the band have been playing music together in private, but that fans shouldn’t hope for a formal reunion.

The US post-hardcore legends formed in 1987 in Washington DC, releasing six albums. They went on hiatus in 2003 after 2001’s ‘The Argument’.

Speaking on the Kreative Kontrol podcast recently, Lally said that the group’s members often get together for jam sessions.

“When we’re all in DC, we totally hang out together and talk and spend a lot of time laughing,” Lally said. “We have a great time together, go out to dinner, and we’ll play some music together.” 

Lally went on to dismiss any reunion speculation. “There’s so much to try to look after to allow Fugazi to do anything, that we do not have the time to give it the respect that it deserves,” he argued. “So unfortunately, it is where it is.”

The band’s frontman Ian MacKaye previously hinted at the band getting together to jam occasionally, saying they did it “because that’s what we love to do”. 

Lally recently formed a band with ex-Fugazi drummer Brendan Canty and guitarist Anthony Pirog. Their self-titled debut album was released last week (March 23) via Dischord Records.

Tom Hardy shares first photo as Al Capone in Fonzo biopic

On Sunday, the Oscar-nominated actor shared the first photo of himself in character as infamous Chicago gangster Al Capone, whom he plays in the planned biopic written and directed by Fantastic Four and Chronicle helmer Josh Trank.

“Chasing Fonzo,” the 40-year-old captioned the image, which sees him posing with a shaved head while clutching a hat that resembles one of Capone’s iconic fedoras.

Fonzo will reportedly follow Capone as the “ruthless businessman and bootlegger who ruled Chicago with an iron fist” at the age of 47, when he’d already built up a reputation as “the most infamous and feared gangster of American lore” and spent several years in prison. According to a press release, the film picks up as “dementia rots Alfonse’s mind and his past becomes present as harrowing memories of his violent and brutal origins melt into his waking life.”

After rising to prominence in the criminal underworld during the Prohibition era, Capone died in 1947 at age 48, having reigned as a ruthless mob boss for seven years until the age of 33.

Hardy’s casting was first announced in October 2016, with Russell Ackerman, John Schoenfelder, and the Academy Award-nominated Lawrence Bender producing. Linda Cardellini, Jack Lowden, Matt Dillon, and Twin Peaks actor Kyle McLachlan will costar in the project, which currently does not have a scheduled release date.

Tom Cruise Jumps Out of Plane 25,000 Feet Up in Death-Defying Stunt for Mission: Impossible – Fallout

Mission: Impossible – Fallout director Christopher McQuarrie shared a new Instagram photo of Cruise doing yet another death-defying stunt for the upcoming film.

In the photo, Cruise, 55, stands at the edge of an open plane door just before jumping out. In the photo’s caption, the director stressed just how difficult this particular stunt can be.

“Just one shot. At 25,000 feet. At 200 mph. At dusk,” wrote McQuarrie of the scene. “Three minutes of available light. Two minutes of action. Once chance per day. Just one. Just one shot left.”

But it seems not all of the actor’s stunts go off without a hitch. Six months ago, Cruise broke his ankle performing on set. It’s not clear from the photo if he performed the plane stunt with the injury, but the actor recently revealed that he’s continued to work through the pain.

It’s not fully healed but we are shooting and we have a release date so I just have to keep going,” he said on The Graham Norton Show. “I spent 8-10 hours a day, seven days a week in rehab because we still have some major stunts to do … but I’m doing well.”

Cruise only recently joined Instagram but has already racked up over one million followers thanks to his adrenaline-pumping posts.

For his social media debut, the actor shared a photo of himself hanging off the side of a helicopter.

“We’ve upped the ante for the sixth #MissionImpossible,” he captioned the photo. “I can’t wait for you guys to see more.”

The actor also joked about his love for danger in his Instagram bio, writing, “Actor. Producer. Running in movies since 1981.”

Mission: Impossible – Fallout will be released on July 27, 2018, and will be the first film in the franchise to be released in Real D 3D. The summer blockbuster will also be released in IMAX 3D.

This isn’t the first time Cardi B has spoken out about her taxes.

Late last year, she posted a video asking that people who owe her money wait until 2018 to pay her so she could avoid the large tax cuts.

Exactly How Katy Perry Gets Her Killer Witness World Tour Hair Looks

The singer, 33, recently told PeopleStyle that she loves her short hair because “there’s nothing to hide behind,” but when it comes to creating her stage looks for the show, hairstylist and Joico guest artist Rick Henry says it takes more planning than one might expect.

“Having short hair on this tour may seem easy. We had a week of tech rehearsals to figure out the exact look that we wanted for the show. During this time, we tried multiple products to see which would hold up best through dancing and hat changes,” Henry told PeopleStyle exclusively. “Hair is a science. After lots of experimenting, we came up with that perfect look!”

As Perry gets ready to kick off the Asian leg of the world tour, we got the lowdown from her pro about getting the “Swish Swish” singer’s mane prepped for the stage every night.

How did Katy’s short blonde hair inspire the overall tone of the Witness Tour?

If you have ever been to one of Katy’s shows in the past, you would know that she loves to switch up the looks with multiple wigs throughout the show. Right before the creative process for the Witness Tour, Katy cut her hair into the short pixie cut that it is today. This look helped create the ’80s, ’90s pop theme for the show.

For a lot of women, cutting hair short is very liberating. It creates a feeling of freedom which I think translates into this show. It’s a sing along dance party. The energy is high on this stage! Don’t be shocked if you see her doing a cart wheel down the cat walk.

What’s the vibe like backstage during Katy’s glam sessions before the show?

On this tour, we have a great group of people that always travel together. It’s important to keep it light and remember to have fun. Between myself, the makeup artist and Katy, there are lots of jokes and laughs. We have a blast!

How long do these pre-show glam sessions usually last?

A usual glam session for the show is about an hour and a half. Katy like to have a fun, yet zen environment. We have good conversations and some good laughs along the way.

What do you do you to maintain her icy blonde hue while on the road?

With Katy’s hair short, it grows fast! I color Katy’s hair every three to four weeks. On the in-between weeks, she will use a good purple shampoo to keep that blonde nice and bright. Coloring it usually takes between an hour to and hour and a half. It depends if we are doing a quick touch up, or the full bleach and tone.

What essential products do you always keep in your kit for tour looks?

While on the road, there are a few must haves that I always have in my kit like the Dyson Supersonic Dryer, Babyliss 1/2 flat iron, Mason Pearson brush, Joico Perfecting Blowout Creme, Joico Hair Shake and Joico Shaping & Finishing Spray.

What’s your secret to keeping her hair healthy despite all the heat styling and color processing she goes through?

With being blonde and the daily styling, it can take its toll on anyone’s hair. To keep Katy’s hair healthy, it is important that we do weekly conditioning treatments. I like to “dust” her ends about every 10 days, keeping her hair in tip top shape.

JAY-Z's Trayvon Martin series, more TV shows to debut at Tribeca Film Festival

as the organization behind the annual event announced Wednesday a wealth of television projects joining the 2018 lineup.

Among the series premiering at this year’s festival is JAY-Z’s Trayvon Martin docuseries Rest In Power: The Trayvon Martin Story, which offers a “definitive look at one of the most talked-about, controversial events of the last decade.” Martin’s parents, Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin, will speak to the audience after a screening of the Paramount Network production.

Also on tap for the Tribeca TV program is Netflix’s Bobby Kennedy for President, Dawn Porter’s revelatory examination of “what America gained and what it lost in the life, vision, politics, and hope of Bobby Kennedy,” as well as the world premiere of the Starz coming-of-age series Sweetbitter, about a young woman, Tess (Ella Purnell), who becomes “intoxicated by the chaotic, adrenalized world of the upscale restaurant industry” in New York City, “where she tastes expensive wine, explores dive bars, and learns who she can trust.” The series is based on Stephanie Danler’s novel of the same name.

Further additions include an early look at season 2 of HBO’s Westworld, the nonfiction TV film Freaks and Geeks: The Documentary featuring interviews with Paul Feig, Judd Apatow, Seth Rogen, Jason Segel, Linda Cardellini, Busy Philipps, and James Franco about their cult hit one-season wonder, PBS’ Little Women, and YouTube Red’s Cobra Kai, an “all-new series in which Ralph Macchio and William Zabka reprise their star-making roles (and rivalry)” from the 1984 film The Karate Kid.

“Tribeca TV has become a destination for some of the most highly anticipated and well-received shows on television,” Cara Cusumano, Director of Programming for the Tribeca Film Festival, said in a press statement. “While we continue that tradition with an exciting slate of new and returning series premieres, we also sought to pay homage to the rich cultural history of TV through two feature documentaries about groundbreaking shows of the past, and all-new episodes of a true-crime trailblazer.”

Tribeca’s previously announced feature film lineup includes the world premiere of Drake Doremus’ sci-fi romance Zoe, Beatriz at Dinner filmmaker Miguel Arteta’s directorial follow-up Duck Butter, and a French New Wave-inspired drama Blue Night, about a famous singer wandering the streets of New York City after a devastating medical diagnosis starring Sarah Jessica Parker, Simon Baker, Jacqueline Bisset, Common, Taylor Kinney, Renée Zellweger, and Waleed Zuaiter.

In conversation events will spotlight cast and crew reunions for Scarface and Schindler’s List, while Lesli Linka Glatter, Jamie Foxx, Bradley Cooper, Robert De Niro, Alexander Payne, Spike Lee, Laura Poitras, Nancy Meyers, and John Legend are also set to speak live at the 2018 edition.

Tess Sweet is an award-winning writer and director, a recovering drug addict, and a lover of dark comedy. In 2011, Sweet graduated with an M.F.A. from the film and television directing program at the University of California at Los Angeles. Sweet now resides in the Bay Area, where she works as a freelance director and editor, serves as president of Loud and Clean, and runs programs for with at-risk youth.

Dinette, created by Shaina Feinberg (USA) – World Premiere. The original series Dinette focuses on a group of female and gender non-conforming friends who come together for a commitment ceremony in the waning days of 2017. Shaina Feinberg leads the ensemble cast through a series of inter-connected vignettes riffing on wounded machismo and the patriarchy.

Shaina Feinberg has directed and produced content for RIOT, Shatterbox and IFC’s Comedy Crib. Her debut as a writer and director, the award-winning feature The Babymooners, blurred the lines between documentary and fiction while examining gender stereotypes. In 2017, her short film Shiva, a hybrid of improvised comedy and actual grief, premiered at Tribeca. Senior Escort Service, her follow-up to Shiva, is a full-length movie that blends nonfiction and fiction.

Driver Ed, created by Jacob A. Ware, Amanda Cowper (USA) – World Premiere. A guy decides to get his driver’s license to impress his NASCAR-loving girlfriend, but unexpected things happen on the open road. With Jacob A. Ware, Layla Khosh, Eddie Diaz, Becca Blackwell.

Jacob A. Ware is an actor and writer, best known for playing Harold Selby on HBO’s Boardwalk Empire. He is the head writer and host of the RYOT Studio show Screen Time; his television credits also include Law and Order: SVU, Shades of Blue, and Late Night with Seth Meyers.

Amanda Cowper is a New York City-based producer and director. As associate producer on NBC’s Late Night with Seth Meyers, Cowper produces all of the show’s field pieces.

Home, created by Micah Sudduth, Keylee Sudduth (USA) – World Premiere. Pulling from the true life experiences of the filmmakers, Home mines the humor and heartbreak of growing into adulthood, leaving home, and balancing individual creative careers as a married couple in the millennial age.

Micah Sudduth grew up in the woods of East Texas and survived years of homeschooling so that he could one day pursue his dream of a) being around people and b) making films.

Keylee Sudduth is a Texan born and raised actor and filmmaker. In childhood, she always found herself better able to connect with others through theater. That has now grown into an unabashed passion for cinematic storytelling.

Pig: The Dam Keeper Poems, created by Erick Oh (USA, Japan) – New York Premiere. Pig: The Dam Keeper Poems is a 2D animated series based on the world of The Dam Keeper, the beloved Oscar-nominated short film by Tonko House. The series shows how Pig remembers his father’s departure and having to step into the role of the dam keeper.

Erick Oh is a Korean filmmaker and animator based in California, whose independent films have won awards at numerous film festivals. After receiving his B.F.A. from Seoul National University and his M.F.A. from the University of California at Los Angeles’s film program, Oh worked at Pixar Animation Studios as an animator, working on Academy Award®-winning films, including Inside Out and Finding Dory.

Snugglr, created by Georgia Bernstein, Cemre Paksoy (USA) – World Premiere. Snugglr is an improvised comedy that follows a young Turkish girl, Cemre, who cuddles strangers, professionally as a last resort to make rent. She winds up fully dressed and in bed with all kinds of characters – including a high school student discovering her sexuality, a piano playing dad, and a twelve-year-old with lice, all of whom are looking for more than just a snuggle, in one weird way or another. In English, Turkish with English subtitles.

Georgia Bernstein is a filmmaker from Los Angeles. A recent graduate from Northwestern University, she’s living in Chicago where she created and directed an original pilot for Condé Nast and Indigenous Media based off her web series, Snugglr. Her first short film about modern neuroticism was an official selection in the 13th annual CineYouth Festival.

Cemre Paksoy is an actor and filmmaker living in Chicago. She recently adapted Snugglr, the web series, into a pilot that can be seen on Condé Nast’s The Scene. She’s from Turkey where she windsurfs and pets dogs.

SHORT FORM

Premiere Screening: Thursday, April 19, 7:15 PM, Regal Battery Park Theater

Alden Fitzpatrick Nusser is a native Manhattanite who got his start directing short documentaries for news outlets, including The New York Times, the New Yorker, and HBO. He is now developing several projects; among them is a samurai flick set in the tropics and a documentary-opera about a plastic surgery-obsessed grande-dame.

Everything is Stories, created by Mike Martinez, Tyler Wray (USA) – World Premiere. Peter Stefan, owner of Graham Putnam & Mahoney funeral parlor in Worcester, Massachusetts, found himself thrust into the national spotlight in the spring of 2013 amid a damning controversy. With implications that still linger to this day, Stefan and his team faced the question of where to draw the line on who deserves a burial. Directed by Daniel Navetta.

Everything is Stories was initially created as a podcast by Garrett Crowe, Mike Martinez, and Tyler Wray. It is now also a documentary series that explores unconventional narratives of the past and present to preserve the eccentric, the authentic, and the personal.

The Last Fisherman, created by Shal Ngo (USA, Vietnam) – World Premiere. In a dystopian future, on the South China Sea, an aging fisherman discovers an android woman from his past.

Shal Ngo is a Brooklyn-based filmmaker who seeks to bring the inner workings of the human brain to the big screen. After graduating from New York University in 2008, he began working in narrative, documentary, and commercial filmmaking. He is now in development on two projects: his debut feature, a sci-fi thriller about a sentient smart house, and a series of stop-motion documentaries about the psychology of mental health.

Flint is a place, created by Zackary Canepari (USA) – World Premiere. This cross platform series about Flint, Michigan, document a specific moment within this American city in an intimate, character-driven way. What happens here happens in many other urban American cities. But in Flint, it happens all at once. It’s what makes Flint so important in the national conversation.

Zackary Canepari is a documentary photographer and filmmaker. In 2010, he teamed with filmmaker Drea Cooper to make California is a Place, a short documentary series about California; their first feature documentary, T-Rex, about female boxer Claressa “T-Rex” Shields, premiered at SXSW in March 2015 and was featured on PBS before the 2016 Olympics.

99 Names of God, created by Yumna Al-Arashi (UK) – World Premiere. Arab-American filmmaker Yumna Al-Arashi embraces the rhythmic rituals that have run alongside Islamic tradition throughout the centuries in this surreal and poetic short film. Piecing together old and new, Al-Rashi’s dream-like imagery breathes fresh air to a subject hardly seen in positive light.

London-based artist Yumna Al-Arashi was born to a Yemeni father and Egyptian mother and raised in the United States. Her work confronts her own struggles of identity and belonging as both a woman and a Muslim. Her background in politics—she studied international politics at the New School—and journalism shines in her work, in which she focuses on humanitarian issues such as women’s rights and labor injustices.

Under Her Skin, created by Rémy Bennett, Kelsey Bennett (USA) – World Premiere. Under Her Skin is an intimate character portrait of 71-year-old photographer Jane Rule Burdine which explores her work, personal struggles, and triumphs in the Mississippi Delta where she grapples with the beautiful yet harrowing complexities ingrained in the culture and landscape of the American Deep South. With Jane Rule Burdine.

Rémy Bennett received her B.A. in acting from the Central School of Speech and Drama in London. Her film work includes Martin Scorsese’s Wolf of Wall Street and HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, and she also runs Hurry Sundown Productions with her husband, Monroe Robertson, and sister, Kelsey Bennett.

Industry and independents will come together at the Tribeca Creators Market, an invite-only event where creators discuss their work with distributors, brands, and MCNs.

The following online and VR/immersive filmmakers will participate in the Creators Market:

Casey Stein (Holy Night Director/Co-Creator) is a Washington, D.C.-born, New York City-educated, and Brooklyn-based director. A lover of skateboarding, theater, and emerging technology, he has worked with the likes of the New York Times and 20th Century Fox.

Bernard Zeiger (Holy Night Writer/Co-Creator) is an award-winning screenwriter and professional game designer. He studied film and economics at New York University and is now an associate writer at Kognito, a health simulation company.

  • Jacob Wasserman is a writer, director, and producer based in Los Angeles, California.
