Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish's Night School tops box office with $28 million
The duo’s adult-education comedy Night School is on track to earn an estimated $28 million in ticket sales at 3,010 theaters in the U.S. and Canada from Friday to Sunday, outpacing fellow new release Smallfoot to become the No. 1 film at the box office.
Heading into the weekend, Night School was projected to gross about $25 million to $30 million. Made for about $29 million and released by Universal Pictures, the film reunites Haddish with her Girls Trip director, Malcolm D. Lee, and producer Will Packer. For comparison, Girls Trip debuted with $31.2 million back in July 2017. As for Hart, Night School’s debut is coming in lower than 2016’s Central Intelligence ($35.5 million) and Ride Along 2 ($35.2 million), as well as 2015’s Get Hard ($33.8 million), but higher than 2015’s The Wedding Ringer ($20.6 million).
Night School centers on a high school dropout (Hart) who starts taking evening classes to get his GED and make himself a better man, with the help of an unconventional teacher (Haddish) and some fellow misfits (Rob Riggle, Romany Malco, Keith David). Critics’ reviews have been tepid, but moviegoers gave it an A-minus CinemaScore.
Taking second place this weekend is Warner Bros’. animated movie Smallfoot, which will earn about $23 million at 4,131 theaters. That figure is slightly below industry projections, which were also in the $25 million to $30 million range.
Directed by Karey Kirkpatrick and made for about $80 million, Smallfoot tells the story of a Yeti who forms an unlikely friendship with a human. The voice cast includes Channing Tatum, James Corden, Zendaya (as Meechee), Common, LeBron James, and Gina Rodriguez. Reviews were generally positive, and audiences gave it an A-minus CinemaScore.
Rounding out the top five this weekend are last week’s winner, The House With a Clock in Its Walls ($12.5 million), followed by A Simple Favor ($6.6 million) and The Nun ($5.4 million). Lionsgate’s slasher movie Hell Fest arrives with an estimated $5.1 million at 2,297 theaters, good for sixth place.
In limited release, National Geographic’s critically acclaimed climbing documentary Free Solo will earn an estimated $$300,804 in four theaters, notching the best per-screen average of the year ($75,201).
According to ComScore, overall box office is up 8.4 percent year-to-date. Check out the Sept. 28-30 figures below.

Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly are a bumbling Sherlock Holmes and Watson in first trailer
The Step Brothers grew up and became Victorian England’s most acclaimed detective duo. Although, based on the first Holmes and Watson trailer, Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly’s take on the legendary literary sleuths still keeps the Step Brothers comedic stylings alive.
This isn’t like the pairing of Reilly with Steve Coogan in the Laurel and Hardy biopic.
Witness the first use of the phrase “no s—, Sherlock” and the birth of the selfie stick as Sherlock Holmes (Ferrell) and Dr. John Watson (Reilly) try to solve a murder mystery in Buckingham Palace in four days, otherwise James Moriarty (Ralph Fiennes) will kill the Queen of England.
As two of the biggest Queen of England stans, Holmes and Watson can’t stand for such things.
Etan Cohen, the director of Ferrell’s Get Hard and one of the screenwriters on Tropic Thunder, helms Holmes and Watson. Rebecca Hall also makes an appearance as something that the gents can’t wrap their minds around: a woman physician, Dr. Grace Hart. A female medical professional that doesn’t offer heroin as a handout to patients? It’s unheard of!

Kinky Boots sets Broadway closing date for spring 2019
Producers announced Friday night that the Tony-winning hit musical will play its last performance on April 7, 2019.
At the time of its closing, the musical will have played 2,507 regular performances and 34 previews.
Based on the 2005 British film of the same name and inspired by true events, Kinky Boots tells the story of a young man named Charlie Price, who inherits his family’s shoe factory and struggles to keep it afloat until he meets a drag queen named Lola, which sparks an idea that could save the business. The production features music by Cyndi Lauper and a book by Harvey Fierstein.
“When we first set out to make this show, we never could have imagined the success it would have here on Broadway and around the world,” Lauper and Fierstein said in a statement. “We speak on behalf of the entire company when we say how grateful we are to the fans who have embraced our work across four continents, and counting!”
Director and choreographer Jerry Mitchell added, “I’ll never forget the very first performance of this show, back in Chicago in the fall of 2012. It was one of those magical nights in the theater, when the material connects with its audiences in exactly the way you hope for. It felt like a gift from the theater gods then, and it still does to this day. In the years since, we have witnessed attitudes towards gender non-conformity start to change all across America in ways we couldn’t have begun to imagine in 2012. It’s never easy saying farewell to a beloved production, but knowing that Kinky Boots is leaving a more accepting world than the one it was born into is hugely gratifying for everyone involved.”
Kinky Boots opened on Broadway in 2013 and won six Tony Awards, including Best Musical and prizes for Lauper, Mitchell for choreography, and lead actor Billy Porter. The current Kinky Boots cast includes Mark Ballas as Charlie Price and J. Harrison Ghee as Lola. In addition to the Broadway production, the musical is also running in London’s West End, as well as tours in the U.S. and around the world.

David Cronenberg says decision not to direct Return of the Jedi was met with 'stunned silence'
but it is hard to imagine the director of Videodrome and the remake of The Fly as a franchise filmmaker. Back in the early ’80s, however, the Canadian auteur was approached about overseeing a little film called Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. Cronenberg’s response to this seemingly plum gig? Thanks, but no thanks.
“I still recall getting a phone call,” Cronenberg told EW earlier this week. “Somebody said that they were from, I guess it was Lucasfilm, and asked me if I was interested in — at that point it was called Revenge of the Jedi, actually, until somebody pointed out that it was against Jedi philosophy to think in terms of revenge. But, anyway, I was asked if I would be interested in considering that, and meeting with everybody, and I said, with the arrogance of youth — relative youth, anyway — I said, ‘Well, I’m not used to doing other people’s material.’ And there was like a stunned silence and then ‘Click’ — hang up. Basically, that was as close as I came to that.”
Return of the Jedi would eventually be directed by Richard Marquand. Cronenberg reveals that he has spent next to no time wondering what his version of the movie might have been like.
“No, not really, because, in a way that’s like doing one episode in a well-established TV series,” says the director. “The casting is fixed of the main characters — the look of it, the tone of it, people’s expectations for it, are all fixed. You are not involved in the creating of that. And therefore you’re a little bit more like a traffic cop than you are like, for me, what a creative director can be. So that’s why it wouldn’t have interested me, really. I mean, you have Alfonso Cuarón doing a Harry Potter episode, and he did his best to try to make it stand out from the others, but basically, it’s a Harry Potter episode. And if you didn’t know that Alfonso directed it, you wouldn’t be able to tell. So, these are not attractive options for me. I mean, there’s the lure of money, and having a big budget, and having excitement around the film you’re making — but on the deep creative level, it would for me be frustrating, I think. Just frustrating.”
So, the folks at Marvel Studios should save themselves the cost of a phone call to Canada?
“They have done that so far!”

Bradley Cooper responds to claims he could direct ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 3’
Bradley Cooper has responded to claims he could direct Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 3 after the original director, James Gunn, was fired.

Gunn was fired by Disney back in July following the re-emergence of a number of his old tweets, which made offensive jokes about pedophilia and rape. Disney’s decision to remove Gunn from his role as head of the franchise he created prompted a wide backlash, with the stars of the films signing an open letter in defence of Gunn a week after his termination.
Cooper, who voices Rocket Raccoon in the Marvel series, recently finished directing and starring in A Star is Born. When approached with the idea of replacing Gunn, Cooper responded: “In directing it?”
“I could never direct anything that I didn’t write,” he continued, in an interview with Joe. “No, I could never direct anything that I didn’t write.”
Last month, Disney appeared to be standing firm on decision to fire Gunn. The director and his UTA (United Talent Agency) representatives were successful in securing a meeting with Disney chief Alan Horn, but the latter only agreed to take the meeting with Gunn in order to “clear the air”.
Though the meeting was described by sources as “civil and professional”, Horn reportedly made it clear to Gunn that he and Disney would not be changing their position. Representatives for Disney and Marvel have declined to comment on the new report.
Chris Pratt, who plays the Star Lord in the films, previously tweeted that Gunn is “a good man” despite the “inappropriate jokes” that led to his sacking.
Pratt wrote: “Although I don’t support James Gunn’s inappropriate jokes from years ago, he is a good man. I’d personally love to see him reinstated as director of Volume 3.”
In the follow-on post, which revealed that some of the cast support Pratt’s call, Pratt praises Gunn for changing their “lives forever”, and urges readers to “stop weaponising mob mentality.”

The Eagles announce massive 2019 world tour – including shows in London, Manchester and Birmingham
The band’s critically acclaimed tour will see the group perform a string of classics from their extensive career, such as, ‘Hotel California,’ ‘One of These Nights’ and ‘Life in the Fast Lane’.
The tour will kick off on Sunday 26 May at the Sportpaleis in Antwerp, Belgium before heading across Europe. Stops include Cologne, Munich, Amsterdam, Zurich, Stockholm and Copenhagen, as well as dates in London (with Special Guest Sheryl Crow), Manchester, Birmingham, Liverpool, Leeds, Glasgow, and Dublin. Earlier this year, it was revealed that The Eagles‘ ‘Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975)‘, which was originally released in 1976, is the be the best-selling album of all-time in the US, with the Recording Industry Association Of America (RIAA) reporting sales of 38 million copies. ‘Thriller’, meanwhile, is five million behind at 33 million copies.
In a statement, The Eagles’ Don Henley said: “We are grateful for our families, our management, our crew, the people at radio and, most of all, the loyal fans who have stuck with us through the ups and downs of 46 years. It’s been quite a ride.”
The new figures include streaming statistics. According to the RIAA’s rules, 1,500 streams of an album or 10 song downloads are equal to one album sale.

Insecure costume designer Shiona Turini breaks down Issa and co.'s covetable fashion
And in the grand tradition of shows like Sex and the City, Girls, and Girlfriends, each of the main characters — Issa, Molly, Kelli, and Tiffany — has her own distinctive style. As each character continues to evolve, so too does her wardrobe, quietly making Insecure one of the most fashionable shows on television. To take a deeper look at the style of each character, EW spoke with Insecure costume designer Shiona Turini about what Issa and co. wear, and why.
Issa: Playfully eclectic and most importantly, evolving
“Issa is occupying a new mental space in an effort to grow up, glow up, and find out what is best for her,” Turini tells EW of Rae’s onscreen counterpart. “She’s evolving personally and professionally, and as we change, so does our style. She’s still eclectic and print-dependent, but she’s ready to explore an elevated version of that… always with a carefully curated selection of vintage, denim and conscious clothing. Her denim will typically be vintage, lived-in, and telling a story.”
Turini adds, “I want to imagine Issa thrifting in her spare time to find that perfect lighter-washed, worn-in pair of jeans — high-waisted, with a relaxed leg that’s stylish and, most importantly, comfortable. This season as Issa grows up, it was important to me that her sartorial choices did as well. It’s less about the actual designers and the brands, and more about the fits, the cuts, and the more grown-up prints and patterns we are exploring.”
Molly: Sophisticated and bright
“This season, Molly is visibly fighting for recognition,” Turini says of Yvonne Orji’s overachieving corporate lawyer. “As a black woman moving from a white-dominated workplace to a now black, male-dominated workplace, she’s hoping to stand out and prove herself. Visually, I’ve translated that using bold color, and often monochrome suiting. In her personal life, it was important to me that we elevate her style and include moments of brand recognition. Professional black women have immense buying power in the luxury market; it’s time we see that represented on television.”
Kelli: Cool, lively, and refined
Kelli (played byNatasha Rothwell) is “the rollicking character of the bunch,” Turini says. “Stylistically, she’s bright and experimental — much like her character. It’s refreshing to see a stylish woman with real curves on television not exclusively dressed in black, or dowdy dresses. In episode 5 [of season 3], Kelli wore a pair of Good American jeans — they were high-waisted with lots of stretch, without losing the feel, weight, and fabrication of true denim. In those jeans Kelli could run, kick, and withstand an attack with a stun gun, in jeans that were still flattering and looked fly!”
Tiffany: Ultra-feminine, with a little spice
“While all of the girls are going through a transition this season, Tiffany’s transition manifests physically,” Turini says of Amanda Seales’ high-maintenance mom-to-be. “Her version of maternity wear heavily injects the diva sensibility we know and love her for. She’s not sacrificing style.”
