By Kevin Rutherford

Cynthia Lennon, the first wife of John Lennon, has died. She was 75.

According to a press release, Lennon died after a “short but brave battle with cancer.”

The news of her death was shared via a press release mentioning that her son, Julian Lennon, was with her.

“Cynthia Lennon passed away today at her home in Mallorca, Spain following a short but brave battle with cancer,” the release reads. “Her son Julian Lennon was at her bedside throughout. The family are thankful for your prayers. Please respect their privacy at this difficult time.”

Lennon met the future Beatle while both attended Liverpool College of Art in a calligraphy class. They married in 1962 and had one child, Julian.

However, in 1968, they divorced after John Lennon left her for Yoko Ono, with whom he remained until his death in 1980.

Lennon was married three more times after her divorce from John, first to Roberto Bassanini and then to John Twist and finally to Noel Charles until his death in 2013. She legally changed her name back to Lennon following the divorce from Twist.
