Here Are the Best #80sBandAnimals Tweets

By Brian Ives

To paraphrase the immortal Timex Social Club, how do hashtags get started?

The answer we can surmise: Who knows? But the most ridiculous ones are the ones that the most fun to follow.

And with that, we bring you some of our favorite tweets from this morning’s #80sBandAnimals hashtag.

As you guessed it, the hashtag combines the names of, well, an ’80s band with an animal.

Also, we’re going to comment on them. Let’s start.

Dragons, as far as we know, aren’t real animals, unless you’re referring to a komodo dragon. But we’re huge Game of Thrones fans, (check out our latest Thrones recap here) so we’ll give this one a #thumbsup.

Yes, @nikidoog, it does count. It’s a reference to Sigue Sigue Sputnik, for those of you familiar with the group. #wellplayed.

Double points, especially since “Roadrunner” is the name of a Modern Lovers classic (albeit one from the ’70s). Surely you’ve heard Joan Jett‘s cover of it. And hey, did you know she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year, by Miley Cyrus no less? Read our report here.

Interesting choice, especially since the actual name—Adam and the Ants—already has the name of an animal in it. But this gets a #pass from us.

Ah, REO Speedwagon, a name ripe for puns.  There even used to be a band called REO Speedealer.

And another pun-dit goes with REO!

OK, @gazgagman, you just added a syllable. “Al” has one syllable, and “owl” has two. But Al himself would probably dig it, so we’re OK with it too.

Bonus points for including a photo. It should have had some newspapers, though.

We love puppies!

This one makes us think of Froot Loops, so we’re ok with it.

Doesn’t rhyme. Sorry, #fail.

#nope

#runnerup, even without the great visual aid.

#winner
