Mumford & Sons had a bit of a tried-and-true formula with their first two albums: either start soft and crescendo toward a cacophonous finish, or start at breakneck speed and end even louder.
So far for Wilder Mind, their third record and first with nary a banjo or kick drum in sight, has shied from that format to a small extent with first two singles “Believe” and “The Wolf,” but things get a little back to basics on the newest taste of the album, released today: “Snake Eyes.”
In a video posted to their YouTube page, Mumford & Sons are shown performing the song in a live setting (though the recording itself appears to be the studio version, not a live form as the video title might suggest).

“Snake Eyes” begins not unlike some of the band’s Babel material, think “Ghosts That We Knew.” Frontman Marcus Mumford’s hushed vocal presides only over picked electric guitar and piano before a quiet but persistent drum beat is introduced on the second verse. Eventually, the song is a telling combination of Mumford old and new, the crescendo punctuated by Winston Marshall’s soaring guitar and quick-paced drumming.
“Snake Eyes” is the third song to be revealed from Wilder Mind, due out in full on May 5. It follows Babel, the band’s 2012 album that won the GRAMMY for Album of the Year in 2013.
