Sam Smith Says Being Called Fat is Worse Than Any Homophobic Slur

By Shannon Carlin

Sam Smith admits in a new interview that he has never struggled with his sexuality, but the same can’t be said of his weight.

In an interview with Australia’s version of 60 Minutes on Sunday (April 19), Smith has admitted that he has a love/hate relationship with food.

“Food has controlled me,” Smith said plainly before explaining that as a kid he would turn to food for comfort. “When I was at school and I wasn’t having a great time or when music wasn’t going very well, I would eat—eating made me feel better.”

But, no matter how good it made him feel, it didn’t feel the void. It just led Smith to be ridiculed by other kids, admitting that comments about his weight are far more hurtful than any homophobic slur.

“If someone called me fat that affects me way more than someone calling me a f—-t.” he said. “It’s like, I am gay and I’m proud to be gay so there’s no issues there.”

Adding, “If someone calls you fat that’s something I would want to change—that’s something I can change—so that will affect me more.”

His comments come weeks after he revealed a new svelte figure, thanks to a diet that helped him lose 14 pounds in 14 days.

In an Instagram post a month ago, Smith wrote that nutrionist Amelia Freer’s book, Eat, Nourish, Glow changed his relationship with food forever.

“It’s not even about weight loss,” he wrote. “It’s about feeling happy in yourself.”
