When Taylor Swift was awarded her Milestone Award at the 50th ACM Awards, she wasn’t sworn in with a performance of some of her biggest hits, a la Miranda Lambert, George Strait and others.
Instead, after a video recognizing her many accomplishments on the ACMs stage, she was awarded by none other than her mother, Andrea Swift.
The moment was particularly poignant, not just because of her mom’s emotional giving of thanks to the country music community for taking her daughter in so many years ago, including recounting the time she wrote “Love Story” when she was “mad, real mad” at her parents for disapproving of a boy she liked. It was also the first major appearance of Andrea Swift since her daughter revealed she had been diagnosed with cancer.

“I know you love her as I love her,” Andrea Swift said. “And for that I thank you eternally.”
Once she was on stage and after embracing her mom, Taylor Swift thanked the audience for their support when she decided, after a lucrative country career, she would be making a fully pop album with 1989. “You showed me who you are with the grace that you accepted that with,” she said.
