After releasing three EPs and their 2013 full-length record, Gold Tattoos, Farewell, My Love were ready for something new. Aside from having a number of lineup changes over the course of the Phoenix band's history as well as a fresh look, the emo rock quartet have finally found their sweet spot and created their latest album, Above It All. With a rejuvenated energy and their creative juices flowing, we caught up with singer and drummer Chad Kowal and to find out more about Farewell, My Love. Whether you're an OG fan or someone who recently picked up their new LP, Chad gave us the lowdown on what you should know about the band.
The Band Name Was Inspired By a LOVEHEATEHERO LYRIC
"Röbby [Creasey] is the one who came up with it," Chad revealed. "I believe it’s a lyric in a LOVEHATEHERO song, if I’m correct. The meaning of the band name is sometimes in order to move on in life, you just have to kind of let go of things that hold you back. So I think Farewell, My Love is a great representation of what we want our fans to feel. They can listen to our music, and then they can let go of what’s bothering them."
They Ditched the Makeup
After years of donning the emo made-up look, the guys took that all away and grew up into a new look and style. "Progression is an important part of any band’s success, even if you don’t always want to," Chad said. "You don’t want to do the same thing over and over again. And for us, we kind of did the makeup image thing since the beginning of the band, and we felt this was an opportunity to do something new. For us, we just felt ourselves growing out of it. But it doesn’t necessarily mean that we don’t enjoy bands who do that or enjoy doing it [ourselves] now and again. But we felt that it was time to change."
This Isn't the First Time Chad Played Drums and Sang in a Band
"I had some prior experience doing that in my previous band — a metalcore band — where I was the drummer but also the vocalist," he explained. "So I had the experience — not necessarily being in the front of the stage — but singing on tracks."
So Chad's Move From the Drum Kit to the Mic Was "Seamless"
Because of the experience in the previous band, Chad said the transition "seemed pretty seamless honestly. I think I always had it in the back of my mind that I would love to do that some day. And when things weren’t really working with the lineup we had with vocals, I was excited to explore this new area and give it my best shot."
They Met Their Newest Member Through Another Musician's Dad
"We are friends with Chris Biersack, who’s the father of the singer of Black Veil Brides," Chad shared. "And when I moved to vocals, we were looking for a guitar player. We put the feelers out for somebody, and [Chris] suggested London [Mckuffey]. We went through the process of trying him out, and he’s been an absolutely amazing addition to the band. He’s one of the best guitar players I’ve ever seen. He’s very driven to make this band the best it could possibly be, so it was very positive thing overall."
They Run Their Own Label
Wanting to have more creative control, Farewell, My Love started their own label, CRCL Records — taking the first letter of each band member's first name — in order to put out their latest effort, Above It All. "We kind of wanted to create something that was eclectic and were like our favorite records growing up — like an album by Queen or Guns N’ Roses or My Chemical Romance or AFI," Chad conveyed. "We kind of just took our time to make it as unique as we possibly could."
And Despite the Hard Work, It's All Paid Off
"I feel we create our best material — whether it’s video work or touring — the best stuff we’ve ever done was when there were no [other] hands involved," he said. "It’s basically us all coming together, throwing our ideas on the table and making it happen. And for us, it only seemed natural to create our own label. It’s been a lot more work and a lot more hours dedicated to different aspects of the band. But with the reception of this new record and the reactions so far, it seems to be 100 percent worth it."
"Don't Stop" Aims to Inspire The Fans
"A lot of our songs are messages to the fans," Chad said. "So for 'Never Stop,' we didn't want them to stop fighting for what they believed in and to always go after their dreams and make what they thought was unachievable achievable."
But They Also Inspire the Band, Too
"I actually have 'Never Stop' tattooed on my hand as a reminder to myself that no matter how hard everything can get to, to always give my best effort," he revealed. "I need to try get lost in the shuffle that is the music business."
And If You Tweet Them, They Will Reply
"Probably the most fan interaction we get is on Twitter," Chad said. "If you ever want to get a hold of us or anything, tweet at us and we'll try our best to get back to you as soon as possible."
