The festival made the announcement Thursday, calling the Oscar-winning actress a “rare and unique artist whose talent and convictions enrich both screen and stage.”
Blanchett will preside over the jury that will choose the award winners at the annual festival in the South of France. Last year’s jury, headed by Pedro Almodóvar, chose Ruben Östlund’s The Square as its Palme d’Or winner.
She continued, “I am humbled by the privilege and responsibility of presiding over this year’s jury. This festival plays a pivotal role in bringing the world together to celebrate story; that strange and vital endeavor that all peoples share, understand and crave.”
Blanchett will become the 12th woman to head the Cannes Film Festival jury when the festival kicks off in May. She’s also one of the women who recently launched the Time’s Up initiative to combat harassment in Hollywood and beyond.
The Australian actress was most recently seen on-screen in Thor: Ragnarok and will appear next as part of the all-female cast of Ocean’s 8, which hits theaters June 8.
The 71st Cannes Film Festival runs from May 8-19, 2018.
