10 Breakout Movie Stars of 2016

We love to over-analyze films and dissect them to the core so much that we often forget their true purpose – to entertain us and let us forget about the crazy world outside the theater’s walls for the next couple of hours. And when we’re talking about a year as complicated as 2016, escapism was truly worth its weight in gold. It’s also impossible to imagine the year’s best movies without the fresh faces that we got to know. These are 10 actors we fell in love with in 2016.

Felicity Jones

Disney, who owns the right for Star Wars franchise these days, is all about girl power, since their latest addition to the Star Wars family is once again carried on by a female lead. This time around it was 33-year-old British actress Felicity Jones, who played brave maverick Jyn Erso in Rogue One. Jones was running and saving the world quite a lot this year. She starred alongside Nicholas Hoult in the action thriller Collide, then helped Tom Hanks crack the secrets of Inferno and finally played a terminally ill mother of the main character in A Monster Calls.

Asa Butterfield

Blue-eyed 19-year-old Brit has a very cinematic appearance – exactly what Tim Burton needed for his adaptation of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. As if time travelling wasn’t enough for the rising cinema star, he also participated in some interplanetary travelling in The Space Between Us.

Margot Robbie

It took Hollywood a while to recognize this Australian beauty as the next go-to blonde bombshell, but 2016 finally fixed that. Margot Robbie’s performance as the psychiatrist-gone-crazy-in-love-with-Joker Harley Quinn was probably the only good thing about overall disappointing Suicide Squad mess of a movie. At least Robbie was glowing and provided us with the most obvious Halloween costume choice of the year. She also starred in The Legend of Tarzan.

Lily-Rose Depp

We all may be tired of Johnny Depp’s messy performances these days, but up until 2016 we hardly got a chance to see his daughter Lily-Rose in action. And just like that 17-year-old Depp turned into a girl of the hour, both on film and in fashion. Chanel picked her as the face of iconic №5 L’eau, while directors lined up to cast her in their films, from Kevin Smith (Yoga Hosers) to Stephanie Di Giusto (The Dancer) and Rebecca Zlotowski (Planetarium). With parents like hers, it’s no wonder she’s a natural.

Zoey Deutch

With such looks and such descent (Deutch is the daughter of Back to the Future’s Lea Thompson), Zoey was destined to work in film. This year she hardly ever left sets. She starred in Dazed and Confused quasi-sequel Everybody Wants Some!!, got in the middle of Robert De Niro and Zac Efron’s shenanigans in Dirty Grandpa and fell in love with James Franco in Why Him? And she shows no signs of slowing down with several more projects lined up for her next year.

Ty Sheridan

Movie fans will recognize Ty Sheridan from Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life, where he got the chance to act as Brad Pitt and Jessica Chastain’s son. Five years later 20-year-old Ty Sheridan is in hot demand and shows impressive flexibility. One day he’s filling in James Marsden's shoes as the new Cyclops in X-Men: Apocalypse and the other is seen in the company of Stephen Moyer in British crime flick Detour. No wonder Stephen Spielberg picked the guy to topline his upcoming sci-fi project Ready Player One.

Jane Levy

Jane Levy’s initial claims to fame were her roles on Shameless and Suburgatory and a starring role in the Evil Dead remake. We’re having a hard time with calling her a scream queen though, as her 2016’s breakthrough thriller Don’t Breath was based around Levy’s need to stay as quiet as possible in order to stay alive. Apart from saving her life, she was also busy filming Twin Peaks sequel series and Monster Trucks flick (both are coming in 2017).

Kate McKinnon

Saturday Night Live fans are more than familiar with Kate McKinnon’s comedic talent — she’s been showering us with her spot-on impressions since 2012. This year she made us laugh at her take on Hillary Clinton, but she also finally stepped outside 30 Rockefeller Plaza and started flying to Hollywood on a regular basis, since her movie career really took off this year. McKinnon was arguably the best thing about that dreadful Ghostbusters remake and also made Office Christmas Party much more bearable.

Haley Bennett

Haley Bennet’s been pretty active for almost 10 years now, starring in indie flicks like Kaboom (if you haven’t seen it – brace yourself for a giant mindfuck of a movie) and more commercial projects like Hole 3D. Yet 2016 was arguably her best year so far. Not only was she the main lady in The Magnificent Seven remake, but also played a key role in The Girl on the Train adaptation. And can we just say how much she reminds us of Jennifer Lawrence? We’d love to see these two play sisters sometime.

Tom Holland

We’ve got just one thing to say: Spidey! Marvel fans are raving about the newest Spider-Man, since he’s pretty much the closest we’ve got to the comic book canon in terms of appearance and overall superhero swag. Although the proper introduction of the new Spider-Man is scheduled for July of 2017, we’ve already got a taste of Hollan’s Spidey in Captain America: Civil War. And we loved what we saw for sure.
