We all know it isn’t really the holidays until large groups of people are drunkenly warbling Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” at every bar’s karaoke night. With Christmas just a few days away, I think we’ve all heard our fair share of that modern day classic.
While Mariah is probably already in your holiday playlist, as are David Bowie, Run-D.M.C., WHAM!, Bruce Springsteen, Pentatonix and possibly even NSYNC, a whole lot of great artists have made Christmas songs that have fallen through the cracks. This, we feel, isn’t right, so we’ve come to the rescue of these under-the-radar tunes.
Here are 9 forgotten Christmas classics from some of our favorite artists.
Lady Gaga – "Christmas Tree"
With lyrics like, “Light me up, put me on top,” and, “My Christmas tree’s delicious,” we get the feeling this song from 2008 might not actually be about the holidays, but this is Lady Gaga we’re talking about. It would have been radically out of character for her to do a normal holiday song, and quite frankly, we like this much better than hearing yet another cover of “White Christmas.”
Britney Spears – "My Only Wish (This Year)"
There was a time, let’s call it the year 2000, when Britney only had one wish for Christmas, and that wish was for true love. At the risk of sounding sacrilegious, “My Only Wish (This Year)” would fit in perfectly alongside Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You.” As an aside, how great would it be if Britney’s kids recited the lyrics to this song whenever they were on a mall Santa’s lap?
New Kids On The Block – "I Still Believe in Santa Claus"
According to this song from their 1989 Christmas album, Merry, Merry, Christmas, NKOTB still believe in Santa Claus. They sing that it may be because they’re still children at heart. Now that we think about it, that’s not a bad way to be. Carry on, NKOTB. We’ll be adding this one to our holiday playlist.
Blink 182 – "Won’t Be Home For Christmas"
If you’re “growing tired of all this Christmas cheer” and feel the holidays need an injection of pop punk, look no further than Blink 182’s “Won’t Be Home For Christmas.” Released as a radio promo in 1997, and reissued internationally as a single in 2001, it’s an anti-Christmas Christmas song that’s pretty hilarious, and will definitely raise an eyebrow or two when it comes on.
Fall Out Boy – "Yule Shoot Your Eye Out"
Another anti-Christmas Christmas song, Fall Out Boy go full emo with their 2003 song, “Yule Shoot Your Eye Out,” singing “Don't come home for Christmas / You’re the last thing I want to see / Underneath the tree / Merry Christmas, I could care less.” Clearly they aren’t interested in having a holly jolly Christmas, or going on a sleigh ride, but who says every Christmas playlist has to be filled with sleigh bells jingling, ring-ting-tingling?
The Killers – "Don’t Shoot Me Santa"
In their 2007 song “Don’t Shoot Me Santa,” The Killers crossed paths with a Santa Claus ready to dole out some vengeance. The band wasn’t exactly on Santa’s nice list, and despite singing about being “a clean living boy,” there seemed to be murderous streaks in both the band and the man in red. This is one Santa you don’t want to mess with!
The Waitresses – "Christmas Wrapping"
Known predominantly for knowing what boys like, The Waitresses gave us a Christmas classic back in 1981 with “Christmas Wrapping.” A perfect ‘80s pop tune – it even includes a sax solo – this one’s a must-have in your holiday playlist.
Bonus: “Christmas Wrapping” was covered by the Spice Girls in 1998. Check out their version of the song, and compare the two.
Master P – "High Fo’ Xmas"
Forget the mistletoe, back in 1994 Master P was enjoying a different kind of green during the holidays, as he was “High Fo’ Xmas.” Also featuring Pizzo, San Quinn, JT The Bigga Figga, and Silkk The Shocker, “High Fo’ Xmas” doesn’t really have all that much to do with Christmas, other than the season being the setting for the song, but if you’ve been looking for a soundtrack for some holiday hot boxing, Master P has the hookup (as always).
Jim Jones – "A Dipset Xmas"
When you think of Christmas, you think of The Diplomats. OK, maybe that isn’t the case, but with the 2006 song “A Dipset Xmas” Jim Jones, Mel Matrix, and Stack Bundles (RIP), gave us a modern hip-hop holiday song, complete with Christmas bells in the beat. So maybe we should think of Dipset at the holidays. If you need us, we’ll be writing a quick note, and leaving milk and cookies, for Cam’ron Claus.
