Pop punk is one of the few genres of music that seemed to come and go, and yet it’s been here all along. The style had a big moment over a decade ago, when artists like Good Charlotte, New Found Glory, Simple Plan and a whole host of others broke into the mainstream in a major way, charting big hits and selling millions of albums. The good times didn’t last long, and now many of those same chart-toppers have a cache to their names that makes them feel somewhat dated.
That may be the case, but pop punk didn’t die with the rise of electronic music, and in fact, it’s still growing. There is an incredible amount of great pop punk music out there these days, and new bands are forming all the time. If you haven’t investigated the scene in a few years, here are 8 acts that you’ll want to listen to for all of the coming year.
Waterparks
This band might be the most exciting new name in pop punk, and they are absolutely one to watch for not just 2017, but years to come. They’re certainly talented enough to make a name for themselves, but they also have some powerful forces at work for their benefit. The group is managed by the two brothers from Good Charlotte (Benji and Joel Madden), who have also been helping out when it comes to producing duties.
Seaway
The Canadian rockers have been around for a few years now, but they are poised to become even bigger with the new year. Their output in the past few years has been impressive, and nobody can claim that the hard work they’ve put in recording and touring hasn’t paid off, as they have shared a stage with some of the coolest established names in the genre. Seaway’s last album, 2015’s Colour Blind, features the song “Best Mistake,” which has to be the most pop punk title ever, and it’ll get you excited for a potential album coming in 2017.
We Were Sharks
One listen to “Bridge Burner” should tip you off that this band isn’t into relaxed, chill pop punk, instead opting for a much more furious style of guitar playing. This is the kind of music you headbang and possibly mosh to at a show, if that’s your thing. Everything about this sound is fast and exciting, and there is more than enough room for an act like this in the genre.
Grayscale
One of the things that I personally find most exciting about Grayscale is how you can hear their raw talent. It’s clear they aren’t a polished act backed by a big recording budget and a decorated producer, but that doesn’t make the music any less wonderful. The band has room to grow and mature, and they are the type of act where it will be fun to follow them on what is sure to be an upwards trajectory.
Sleep On It
This Chicago-based band has a look that makes one think hardcore and a sound that could easily be adopted by radio across the country if they got the right push. The group, whose music is exceptionally melodic and catchy as hell from the get-go, has been together for a handful of years already, and in that time they’ve accrued a sizable fanbase that is dedicated to them and their craft. Thankfully, they don’t take things too seriously — if you don’t believe me, check out the video for “Unspoken” above.
Broadside
I don’t know about you, but I have a soft spot for an attractive man that can scream pop punk to me, and that’s one of the many things that Broadside has going for it. The band hails from Virginia, which has been known to produce both lovers and some of the best pop punk acts the world has ever heard, so they have some big shoes to fill. Thankfully, a quick listen to any of their singles should go to show that their brand of the style is up to par.
As It Is
Already an established name in the pop punk world, As It Is still has a lot of room to grow into a leading role, which seems very possible for the band. The music is great, the choruses are powerful...the only thing you might need to get used to is Patty Walter’s vocal style, which is unlike anything you’ve probably heard. It’s light, thin, but the man can carry a tune when he needs to, and with the rough screaming of his bandmates, it all works out.
Forever Came Calling
What started a decade ago as a cover band has now become one of the more respected names in pop punk, and for good reason. The group has experienced many lineup changes over the years, with band members coming and going, but somehow the music hasn’t changed too much. Ten years in, the music is just as massive as ever, and it seems to be getting better with time. It’s been a little while since some new music was shared, so 2017 could see the band drop their best material yet (no pressure guys).
