Making a raunchy music video or posing for a steamy photoshoot is one thing, but having real sex on camera is a completely different story. What makes so many famous people risk their careers and make private videos that often go public? Is it narcissism? Or a desire to capture on film the sexual height of your life? You can’t be a proper socialite without a sex tape. That rule was established by Paris Hilton back in 2004, when her private video with then-boyfriend Rick Salomon was released by Salomon under a clever name, “1 Night In Paris.” The celebration of night vision camera and Paris’ sexual techniques turned the heiress into a tabloid darling overnight (pun intended).

Remember the innocent days when Kim K was just one of the members of Paris Hilton’s squad? Kim clearly learned a thing or two from her famous friend. The sex tape in question was filmed by Kim and her then-boyfriend Ray J back in 2002, but made public in 2007 — just in time for Kim’s proper media arrival. There’s hardly anything truly shocking on the video, but culture-wise it was quite a momentum. So much so that PageSix recently ran an article entitled “The Kim Kardashian Sex Tape: An Oral History.” Classy!

Sex tapes/nude selfies may be all the rage among younger celebrities, but it’s hardly anything new. Just ask Rob Lowe, who made a private video of him having fun with not one, but two girls who he met at the club in 1988. He decided to film all the action, but didn’t expect the ladies to take off with the raunchy videotape while he went to bathroom. Next year, the recording was released and it was revealed that one of the girls was 16 at the time of the recording. Unlike Paris’ or Kim’s cases, Lowe’s Hollywood career was pretty much over after this scandal.

Pamela Anderson may have been hailed as the '90s sex symbol with her stint at Baywatch and iconic spreads in Playboy magazine, but she went an extra mile in securing her bombshell status and made not one, but two sex tapes: first with Tommy Lee and then one with Bret Michaels. Girl just wants to have fun… and capture it on film.

Stand-up comedian-turned-TV-host may mock Kardashians for their tacky ways, but she’s no stranger when it comes to stripping it all off herself. But long before Handler was posting hilarious naked selfies on Instagram, she made a sex tape in 2000 and re-cut it with her stand-up routine. Then she mailed the videotape to several agents. When the tape eventually leaked to the general public in 2010, Handler was already a well-established comedian, author and TV host. Take a note, you wannabe comedians.

Running the grainy footage cost Gawker a hefty $115 million, so if you’re an editor thinking about making WWE star's sex video public, think again: you may be hit with a thunder of debts.

Yet Motley Crue’s Vince Neil thought it was a good idea to capture his intimate moments with porn star Janine Lindemulder and Penthouse model Brandy Ledford. With a cast like this, no wonder it became a hit on the adult market.

One more rockstar on our list, KISS’ Gene Simmons claims he had no idea that he was being filmed while having sex with an unidentified woman. We’re having a hard time believing the star of 2008’s video, since Simmons also claimed to have slept with almost 5,000 groupies and to have Polaroid snaps of his lovers (which he reportedly burned on the request of his wife Shannon Tweed).
