Marijuana is going mainstream, and entrepreneurs around the nation are looking to get their foot in the door of this emerging industry right as it takes off. Many celebrities, who also happen to be cannabis enthusiasts, have even thrown their hats into the proverbial ring by lending their names to new marijuana brands both medical and recreational. Here are the celebrities currently leading the pack of pot sponsorships.
Snoop Dogg
Snoop Dogg has become a major investor in recreational cannabis throughout the last few years, proving his image as a principled pothead is more than just for show.
On top of founding the digital news source Merry Jane, in November 2015 he lent his name to a new legal line of marijuana flowers, concentrates and edibles called Leafs by Snoop, becoming the first major celebrity to do so. So essentially, everyone else on this list is following along a trail first blazed by Snoop Dogg.
Willie Nelson
A longtime advocate of legalization and member on the advisory board of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML), Willie Nelson finally got the opportunity to become involved in the fledgling industry in 2015, when he announced the establishment of his own pot brand Willie's Reserve.
The company, called "a culmination of his vision, and his whole life," plans to establish chain stores and add more as new states get around to legalizing.
The Game
As with Snoop Dogg, rapper The Game's affinity for marijuana has been well-documented in his lyrics.
Last year the Compton native became the first celebrity to partner with a California-licensed medical marijuana dispensary, The Reserve in Santa Ana. He's also in the process of creating and marketing his own strains with the help of G FarmaBrands.
Wiz Khalifa
Wiz Khalifa's frequent cannabis use has previously resulted in the rapper being arrested multiple times for possession, but just last year, it also paved the way for a lucrative business opportunity.
Khalifa partnered with Colorado's RiverRock Cannabis to curate his own line of products, including his namesake strain "Khalifa Kush."
Melissa Etheridge
Singer-songwriter and medical marijuana user Melissa Etheridge lends her name to a more refined method of cannabis consumption.
Along with the Santa Cruz dispensary Greenway Compassionate Relief, she is cultivating a line of cannabis-infused wine tinctures whose focus is more on pain relief than any psychoactive effects. The unusual operation exists only at a small scale currently.
Whoopi Goldberg
Last year, Whoopi Goldberg co-founded Whoopi & Maya, a line of medical marijuana products, including a bath soak and sipping chocolate, designed specifically for women suffering from severe menstrual cramps.
Founding the company was a natural move for Goldberg, who has been self-medicating her own cramps using cannabis her whole life.
Tommy Chong
As the former half of the perpetually high comedy duo Cheech & Chong, Tommy Chong practically owes his fame and fortune to cannabis, which he's used in more recent years to alleviate his struggles with cancer.
Today the comedian and his son Paris are promoting a brand of marijuana products dubbed Chong's Choice, distributing strains produced by smaller growers and marketed with his celebrity brand.
Cliff Robinson
During his NBA career, Cliff Robinson's fondness for cannabis resulted in an arrest and one-game suspension for possession, but now it's helping him found his own pot business in Portland, OR, where he previously played ball.
His marijuana dispensary, to be called "Uncle Spliffy" after Cliff's old nickname "Uncle Cliffy," was announced last January but has yet to materialize.
Ghostface Killah
Wu Tang-member and solo rapper Ghostface Killah returned to cannabis in recent years after a decade-long break, and he's continuing to promote the herb with his line of herb oil, dubbed Wu Goo.
Currently available only in California dispensaries, the flavored oil cartridges were made in collaboration with Killah Priest and designed for Dynamite Stix vape pens.
Woody Harrelson
Longtime advocate Woody Harrelson gets an A for effort in the business side of cannabis, as the True Detective star's application to open his own medical dispensary in Hawaii was rejected in April 2016.
It's unclear if Harrelson has any further plans in the marijuana business, especially now that he's reportedly quit smoking after 30 years.
Margaret Cho
Comedian and sitcom creator Margaret Cho launched her own strain of OG Kush, cleverly dubbed Cho-G, in fall of 2015. The strain is available in dispensaries throughout the bay area and we must assume it goes perfectly with Cho's stand up.
Method Man & Redman
Frequent collaborators Method Man and Redman made their love of pot known through lyrics and their starring in the cult stoner flick How High.
Last year they too went into business by partnering with the weed-locating app BlazeNow, which connects smokers with dispensaries and other legal pot-related businesses in their area.
Roseanne Barr
Roseanne Barr has been a sitcom star, presidential candidate, and now a celebrity potrepeneur.
Last year, the comedienne announced she had invested in a Santa Ana medical dispensary called Roseanne's Joint. Barr, who smokes as treatment for her glaucoma, is creating her own marijuana delicacies for the shop, including a line of THC-infused macadamia nuts grown on her farm in Hawaii.
The Marleys
Foundational reggae artist Bob Marley was a passionate advocate of cannabis, and his family is moving forward with his ideals in an almost-post-legalization world.
His family partly developed Marley Natural, ostensibly the world's first global cannabis brand, with merchandise ranging from strains and hemp oils to pipes and paraphernalia.
