Everything a celebrity does in his/her working hours is some sort of a statement. And there’s hardly a better opportunity to make the masses talk than a session with a famously risk-taking photographer. While some of the people on our list later commented that they didn’t expect their shoots to start a fire, we seriously doubt that. Strike a pose, there's nothing to it, SHOCK!
Britney Spears by David LaChapelle
Rolling Stone
What would Tinky Winky say?! Back in 1999, Britney Spears emerged seemingly out of nowhere to change the pop landscape forever and turn the image of a well-behaved high school girl into something way sexier, baby. Rolling Stone magazine saw that as a perfect opportunity to give David LaChapelle a call and ask him to shoot Britney in her bedroom (obviously). Overtly sexual photos of the then 16 popstar caused an uproar, prompting Britney herself to claim that she was “totally tricked” into unbuttoning her sweater and giving the camera her trademark not-a-girl-not-yet-a-woman look.
“The whole thing was about me being into dolls and in my naive mind I was like, 'Here are my dolls!' she later told the press, "And now I look back and I'm like, 'Oh my gosh, what the hell?' But he did a very good job of portraying me in that way. It certainly wasn't peaches and cream."
Seventeen years later LaChapelle and Spears teamed up again for a scandal that never was. LaChapelle filmed a (reportedly) steamy video for Britney’s “Make Me…” which the singer’s camp decided to never release, opting for a tamer alternative version. Well, at least we still have the “Everytime” video from these two, which is as iconic and daring as the Rolling Stone shoot.

Demi Moore by Annie Leibovitz
These days, pregnant-and-naked cover shoots are as common as photoshoped faces on the covers of glamorous magazines. But back in 1991, when Demi Moore stripped down in front of Annie Leibovitz, it was a very bold move.
Annie Leibovitz
The cause was good: it was supposed to comment on Hollywood’s obsession with thinness and an A-list actress was more than capable to combat all the clichés. Although all parties involved understood it was also a risky move and that issue of Vanity Fair was sold in white envelopes, only making Moore’s eyes visible.
There was still some backlash regarding the shoot, which Moore didn’t understand at all: “I did feel glamorous, beautiful and more free about my body. I don't know how much more family-oriented I could possibly have gotten.” That’s why just a year later she showed off her naked body once again on the cover of Vanity Fair — this time around “wearing” only body paint. But while the shoot cemented Moore’s celebrity status, her following experimentation with nudity in the form of 1996’s critically bashed movie “Striptease” pretty much ruined her movie career.
Kim Kardashian and Kanye West by Annie Leibovitz
In 2014 Annie Leibovitz was a long-time serving queen of celebrity photography, while Kim Kardashian was a well-established socialite with a questionable career tactics, a sex tape and a marriage to the man of nuclear ego who calls himself Yeezus. Yet Vogue’s mighty editor Anna Vintour decided the pair belonged on the cover of the iconic fashion magazine and green lit the shoot.

Fashion enthusiasts and lots of fellow celebrities hated the move, and the issue reportedly sold much less than expected. But in the Kardashian-obsessed world, nobody cares about the numbers or what the others think. It was Kim K’s “dream come true,” and let’s just thank her for not taking off her clothes and “breaking the Internet” for once.
Melania Trump by Antoine Verglas
In 2000, Melania Trump invited British GQ’s crew on board of her then-boyfriend Donald Trump’s Boeing 727 and didn’t hold back — a professional model appreciated the opportunity to pose naked or semi-naked inside the jet’s gold-encrusted interiors.

She clearly wasn’t aiming for a Bond girl status there, but would certainly make a perfect Austin Powers sidekick. The shoot received a second life since Trump’s political career went full speed, and now Melania lists it among her biggest achievements on the White House’s official website. She is definitely the First Lady to do anything like that.

Emma Watson by Tim Walker
Who would have thought that getting Hermione out of that Gryffindor uniform would cause such a riot? Well, at least to the people who have a one-sided take on feminism.
Tim Walker / Vanity Fair
These people were quick to blame Emma Watson for that nearly topless shoot for Vanity Fair. And the Beauty and the Beast star was even quicker to defend her risky but stylish shoot: “Feminism is about giving women choice. Feminism is not a stick with which to beat other women with. It’s about freedom, it’s about liberation, it’s about equality. I really don’t know what my tits have to do with it.”
