10 Unique Music Festival Destinations You Should Experience This Year

At some point #FestivalLife can get rather repetitive: you come to the field, you rage, you go home tired, dirty and happy. But there are several ways to step up your festival game and party like there’s no tomorrow in some truly unique spots. From a huge open-air museum of giant industrial machines to full-on party cruises, from creating and destroying art in the middle of the desert to boarding a party train, we’ve scouted 10 unique locations for your oncoming festival season.

Cruise

All hands on deck, all ravers on board! Cruises aren’t for the elderly anymore. This season there are several cruise festivals that will turn the water into a Jacuzzi with some of the finest producers showering the guests with hot beats. The first big cruise sails very soon: World Club Dome will launch its first sea adventure, World Club Cruise on April 25 in Mallorca, Spain, and will send the cruise across the shores of Barcelona, Ibiza and back to Mallorca on April 29, while EDM’s go-to partymakers like Robin Schulz, W&W and Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike will provide the fist-pumping-ready soundtrack.

But don’t worry if you don’t have time to apply for your Spanish visa just yet. There will be more grand sea/electronic adventures: The Ark (this one starts in Barcelona) from August 31 through September 3, and MDRNTY Cruise on September 16-20 (from Genoa to Palma).

12th Century Monastery

Ever wanted to know what it feels like when a DJ really takes you to church? Try UVA festival in Ronda, Andalucia, Spain, kicking off June 2-4.

UVA

Branded as “Spain’s first true boutique festival,” it will occupy the 12th century monastery-turned-vineyard-turned-scenic-party-venue. The line-up won’t be limited to electronic music: there will be jazz, bossa nova, hip-hop, disco and, you guessed it, techno. It’s surely a nice change from your run-of-the-mill rundown warehouse party.

Fairytale Garden

Does “Narnia for adults” sound as exciting to you as it does to us? And would you really be surprised that such place a exists in the city of many sins and wonders known as Amsterdam? Mystic Garden Festival is a one-day adventure that will happen on June 17 in Sloterpark, Amsterdam. The event will merge nature with the industrial charm of techno. Costumes are highly encouraged, so make a good use of these elf’s ears you have lying around the house from last Halloween.

Mystic Garden

Chances are, you’ll be left craving more fairtytalefied festivities. So head to Gelsenkirchen, Germany, on July 29 for the UNITE With Tomorrowland event — a spin-off of the famous Belgian festival Tomorrowland, famous for its Disneyland-for-adults production. The headliners will be escorted to Germany on helicopters to create a one-of-a-kind simultaneous live event. Drop your glass slippers and dance the night away.

Beach

Picnic on a beach lost its charm? Prepare to get majorly sanded on Sandbox Festival in Egypt on May 4-6. The line-up is big and buzzing with fine electronic acts, but the festival has many reasons to ditch the dancing in the sand and head straight to water (as if you needed any convincing in the first place). There will be kiting, diving, snorkeling and unlimited tanning.

Sandbox

Another great opportunity to put your bikini on (or – no judging – off) to the sounds of electro’s biggest names is Dreambeach festival, that will rock Beach Villaricos in Almeria, Spain, for five days straight, starting August 10. Mighty Andy C, Carl Cox, Borgore and many more will join the party. And you should, too.

Stadium

Don’t like football that much but still want to experience that stadium rush? Then book a trip to Incheon, South Korea, this September, because you don’t want to miss the launch of World Club Dome Korea. The huge electronic festival will be held on September 22-24 in the so-called “biggest club in Asia” aka Munhak Stadium, originally built for the 2002 FIFA World Cup. The line-up can be considered a World Cup of EDM: Afrojack, Armin van Buuren, DJ Snake, Steve Aoki, Marshmello and many others will bring their best game. Oh, and one more little detail: there will be a 20-floor-tall club. Let it sink in for a bit, okay?

WorldClubDome

If Europe’s more of your thing, then there’s also the original World Club Dome in Frankfurt, Germany, on June 2-4 inside the massive Commerzbank Arena, which has enough football history of its own. This year Deadmau5, Hardwell, Martin Garrix, Solomun and other members of EDM elite will join the festival.

Train

Trains don’t exactly scream “PARTY TIME!” — the sweaty bodies we’re pressed against every rush hour aren’t usually the bodies of like-minded club kids. But if you still want to know what it’s like to party at full-speed then BigCityBeats has an event just for you.

BigCityBeats

It’s called World Club Dome Ice train and it brings all the Parisian ravers to World Club Dome in Frankfurt “at 130 beats per minute speed” on June 2. Party on our way to the party? Give us tickets, please!

Jet

Getting high at a festival has a whole new meaning when we’re talking about World Club Dome’s Club Jet, which sends the ravers sky-high on board of the A340 private jet. It has 2 DJ areas and small-but-fierce line-up of 6 DJs. This year’s jet is about to be announced.

Museum of Industrial Machines

Germany’s Ferropolis is an open museum of huge industrial machines, but since 1997 it also turns into a spectacular electronic extravaganza known as Melt! Festival. The 3-day pass gets you right in the middle of the electronic action and saves you a spot in the festival’s camping area. This year the festival will be held on July 14-16 and will see the likes of Die Antwoord, Fatboy Slim, The Kills and M.I.A. performing on epic Mad Max-esque background.

Island

Nothing says “party getaway” like a party on an island. There’s obviously Ibiza for all your partying kings and queens, but there are more ways to immerse yourself in secluded debauchery. For example, this August Europe’s monster of a festival, Sziget, will celebrate its 25th birthday on the city island of Budapest, Hungary.

Rockstar Photographers

A true riot of an event, Sziget runs for a whole week and always brings top notch line-up (Pink, Wiz Khalifa, Rita Ora, Mac Demarco, Anne-Marie are playing this year with more names to be added soon). You can rent an apartment in the city or set up a tent and forget about the world outside. Fair warning: Sziget withdrawal is very much a thing, so brace yourself. Our advice: stay for an extra day in Budapest to detox yourself in the city’s legendary bath houses.

Desert

Looks like we did save the best for last. And talking about saving, we hope that you know that going to one of the world’s most famous festivals won’t come cheap.

Julia Duranova

Yes, we’re talking about the mighty Burning Man, that’s been happening for 30 years in Black Rock Desert in Nevada, USA. Everyone who gets a chance to go there, says that the week in the desert still burns brightly in their memory, quite literally — every art object created there has to be burned at the end of the festival’s run in an epic bonfire. It’s all about unlimited creativity, free spirit and learning to live at peace with sand.
