The first decade of this millennium was nearly impossible to define musically. No one genre dominated the airwaves, and with the prevalence of the single, we had a plethora of artists who were here today, gone tomorrow.
This lack of a musical identity led to a collection of party songs rocketing to the top of the chart. When in doubt, have a good time, right?
The majority of this list of the 17 songs that spent the most time at #1 in the ‘00s could still spark a good time if they were put on today. A few, however, might clear the dance floor, and produce a loud groan from anyone within hearing distance.
One act took over the top spot for half a year. Who was it? Click through to find out.
50 Cent – In Da Club
Weeks at #1: 9
Year: 2003
When 50 dropped this one it was a wrap. You couldn’t go anywhere without hearing “In Da Club,” and because of this, Fiddy had the music world in the palm of his hands.
It’s no coincidence Jay Z had one of his “retirements” in 2003. Seeing the writing on the wall that 50 Cent now ruled both New York, and hip-hop, Jay decided to play it safe rather than take on the monster that was Fiddy.
Beyonce w/ Sean Paul – Baby Boy
Weeks at #1: 9
Year: 2003
This was on a Beyonce album, hence Beyonce getting top billing in the credits, but it really seems more like a Sean Paul song with Beyonce guesting on it. You know what, we’d have been down for a whole album of collabs like this one.
Outkast – Hey Ya!
Weeks at #1: 9 weeks
Years: 2003-2004
The Outkast song that many longtime Outkast song fans hated, but an entire generation of pop fans fell in love with, “Hey Ya!” ended up the most popular Outkast song of all-time. This stings a bit for those of us who loved when the ATLiens were all about their Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik, but go ahead and shake it like a Polaroid picture.
Mario – Let Me Love You
Weeks at #1: 9
Year: 2005
We remembered this song as being popular, but nine weeks at number one?!?! We had no idea!
Mario’s had a far better career than most give him credit for, and while songs like “Just A Friend 2002,” and “Braid My Hair,” may have more staying power in our memories, “Let Me Love You” was a bonafide mega-hit.
50 Cent w/ Olivia – Candy Shop
Weeks at #1: 9
Year: 2005
“Candy Shop” hit at a time when 50 Cent was charting as many as five songs at once on the Billboard Hot 100, sometimes even having as many as four of those songs in the top ten, and this was before streaming!
Was this Fiddy’s best song? Nope, but it didn’t matter, in 2005 we ate up everything 50 gave us.
Santana w/ The Product G&B – Maria Maria
Weeks at #1: 10
Year: 2000
One of the greatest guitar players to have ever lived, and an R&B duo we never heard from again. Hey, it turned out to be a recipe for chart success, notching Carlos Santana hit second long-running #1 hit off of Supernatural.
I think everyone knows what his other long-running hit from that album was, but if you don’t recall, “It’s a hot one, like seven inches from the midday sun …”
Ashanti – Foolish
Weeks at #1: 10
Year: 2002
Few R&B singers were as popular as Ashanti back in the early ‘00s, and “Foolish” was easily one of her biggest hits. For the song, Ashanti was armed with the same DeBarge sample used for the remix of Biggie’s “One More Chance,” and the video starred Terrence Howard, who gained valuable music industry acting experience he’d later use on the TV show Empire. Winning combinations all around!
Nelly w/ Kelly Rowland – Dilemma
Weeks at #1: 10
Year: 2002
Speaking of winning combinations, Nelly and Kelly Rowland proved to be a dynamic duo with their slowed down relationship jam “Dilemma.”
This single was a turning point for Nelly, who currently manages to stay hip-hop while making appearances on songs by big name country artists.
Mariah Carey – We Belong Together
Weeks at #1: 10
Year: 2005
Remember how Mariah ruled the ‘90s, having three of the decade’s longest reigning #1 songs? That dominance was still there in the ‘00s, as in 2005 “We Belong Together” turned out to be another Mariah classic, spending 10 weeks at #1.
Kanye West w/ Jamie Foxx – Gold Digger
Weeks at #1: 10
Year: 2005
Arguably one of the more misogynistic songs to ever hit the top of the chart, Kanye’s assessment of women’s needs, and relationships in general, was just as addictive as it was troubling. We sure as heck cranked it up, and sang along, for quite a while, though.
Beyonce – Irreplaceable
Weeks at #1: 10
Years: 2006-2007
Speaking of relationship songs that were troubling, Beyonce gave us “Irreplaceable,” a little ditty about how any man she dates could easily be replaced.
“Irreplaceable” represented a radical shift in attitude in R&B, as during the ‘90s our top R&B hits were all about love, or loss, while in the ‘00s songs about how much better we are than our exes dominated the genre, and the charts.
Where’s the love, yo?
Flo Rida w/ T-Pain – Low
Weeks at #1: 10 weeks
Year: 2008
This happened. This happened for 10 weeks in 2008. This happened for 10 weeks in 2008 and we still can’t get the damned chorus out of our heads.
“Low” was one of the ultimate earworm jams of the decade.
Destiny’s Child – Independent Women Part I
Weeks at #1: 11
Years: 2000-2001
Just a year after telling us they wanted someone to pay their “Bills Bills Bills” Destiny’s Child hit us with a song celebrating being strong independent women.
Beyonce and friends were nothing if not a contrast in extremes.
Eminem – Lose Yourself
Weeks at #1: 12
Years: 2002-20003
The lead single from the 8 Mile soundtrack, and a not so gentle reminder of the dangers of eating mom’s spaghetti right before a rap battle, “Lose Yourself” would turn out to be one of the biggest hits of Slim Shady’s career.
Is it really any surprise? Combine Em’s insane popularity at the time, a hit movie, and a wildly inspirational chorus, and it would be strange if this song hadn’t blown up.
Usher w/ Lil’ Jon and Ludacris – Yeah!
Weeks at #1: 12
Year: 2004
Bring together one of the biggest stars in R&B, a legendary producer/ad-lib specialist, and one of the most popular hip-hop artists of the era, and the result is “Yeah!”
This mega-hit stayed at #1 for 12 weeks, and can still fill dance floors 13 years later.
Fun fact: Usher bounced himself from the top spot, as “Burn” overtook “Yeah!”
Black Eyed Peas – Boom Boom Pow
Weeks at #1: 12
Year: 2009
We may all try to deny it in 2017, but everyone loved Black Eyed Peas back in 2009.
It seems like another time entirely, but BEP ruled the freakin’ world just eight years ago.
“Boom Boom Pow” was just the start of their reign at the top, as 12 weeks of this song at #1 was immediately followed by …
Black Eyed Peas – I Gotta Feeling
Weeks at #1: 14
Year: 2009
Between “Boom Boom Pow,” and “I Gotta Feeling,” Black Eyed Peas had the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for 26 straight weeks. That’s half the f*cking year!
If you try to pretend you weren’t partying to these songs, we know you’re lying. We all prepped for nights out to “I Gotta Feeling,” and got down to “Boom Boom Pow.”
In 2009, it was the Black Eyed Peas’ world, and we were just living it.
