As we all know, Drake didn’t really start from the bottom, he started on Degrassi, but “Started from Degrassi, now we’re here” isn’t nearly as catchy as they lyric he went with, so we’ll forgive the former wheelchair Jimmy for the exaggeration.
Drake, however, isn’t the only person who “started from Degrassi.” The following 13 notable names were also on the long-running Canadian teen melodrama.
Nina Dobrev
Where you know her from: Dobrev vaulted onto the A-list thanks to her role as Elena Gilbert on The Vampire Diaries. Come 2017 she’ll be seen on the big screen in xXx: Return of Xander Cage (aka xXx: Reactivated) alongside Vin Diesel, Samuel L. Jackson, Tony Jaa, Donnie Yen, and Ruby Rose.
Her role on Degrassi: Teen mom Mia, who arrived at Degrassi with a daughter, and would eventually leave the school for a burgeoning modeling career.
Jordan Gavaris
Where you know him from: Gavaris plays Felix Dawkins on the BBC America sci-fi drama Orphan Black. He deals with the many clones of his adoptive sister that have all become part of his very unique extended family.
His role on Degrassi: For two episodes Gavaris played Nathan, a potential love interest of Degrassi star quarterback Riley Stavros, but at the time of their meeting Riley isn’t out of the closet, or anywhere near comfortable with his sexuality.
Shenae Grimes-Beech
Where you know her from: Grimes-Beech starred in the reboot of 90210 as Annie Wilson, and was in Scream 4.
Her role on Degrassi: One of the most memorable characters in the show’s long history, Grimes-Beech played Darcy Edwards, who captained the school’s Spirit Squad, but whose life took a dark turn after she was drugged and raped while attending a party. The results of this were a case of chlamydia, and some serious mental instability. Once she came to terms with what happened to her, she left Degrassi during her senior year to build schools in Kenya.
Shanice Banton
Where you know her from: Banton played the role of Ruth Solomon in the 2016 Jesse Owens’ biographical drama Race.
Her role on Degrassi: Spirit Squad member, and eventual student council president, Marisol Lewis.
Landon Liboiron
Where you know him from: Liboiron starred in Eli Roth’s Netflix series Hemlock Grove, Steven Spielberg’s Fox series Terra Nova, and had a recurring role on the CW series, Life Unexpected.
His role on Degrassi: Declan Coyne, the rich son of a diplomat. He oftentimes came off as arrogant, whether intended, or not, and was close with his fraternal twin, Fiona.
Cassie Steele
Where you know her from: Steele had a starring role on the short lived, but brilliant, CW drama The L.A. Complex.
Her role on Degrassi: Who could possibly forget Manny Santos? We literally saw Steele grow up before our eyes during her 180 episode run on the show.
Shannon Kook
Where you know him from: Kook was in both The Conjuring, and The Conjuring 2.
His role on Degrassi: Zane Park, soccer player, turned football kicker, who pushed quarterback Riley Stavros to come out of the closet in the midst of their tumultuous on-again, off-again, relationship.
Raymond Ablack
Where you know him from: The second of three Degrassi actors to have appeared on Orphan Black, Ablack not only has a small role on the sci-fi hit (maybe we’ll see him again), he also did six episodes of the Syfy series Defiance, and three episodes of Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments.
His role on Degrassi: The level-headed Sav Bhandari, who came from a strict Muslim background, but disobeyed a few of the rules his parents laid down, including dating girls outside of his religion. Sav’s sister, Alli, would prove to be a far bigger headache for their parents.
Miriam McDonald
Where you know her from: McDonald appeared on an episode of Orphan Black, and was also in Poison Ivy: The Secret Society, certain scenes from which we definitely can’t put on this site, but let’s just say a whole lotta guys had some visual fantasies fulfilled.
Her role on Degrassi: For 180 episodes McDonald played Emma Nelson. The daughter of a teen mother, she was known for being mature, and responsible, as well as being an idealist, and an environmentalist, who was never shy about voicing her opinion.
Evan Williams
Where you know him from: Williams played Luke on the MTV series Awkward.
His role on Degrassi: Kelly Ashoona, the unlikeliest college roommate of Emma, Manny, and Liberty. He and Emma dated, but he was kicked out of the dorms while attempting to dispose of weed brownies.
Aislinn Paul
Where you know her from: Paul played Phoebe Frady on Heroes Reborn.
Her role on Degrassi: Clare Edwards, a character who had more major story arcs than the law should allow. From being the straight laced, all about the books girl, to attempting to break out of her shell, to having her ex-boyfriend become her step-brother, to developing cancer, which she beat, to having a Bipolar boyfriend, to getting pregnant, to having a miscarriage, Clare probably won’t be looking back on her high school years with any sort of fondness.
Dylan Everett
Where you know him from: Technically a child actor before Degrassi, Everett is most known by American audiences for his role as Mark-Paul Gosselaar in The Unauthorized Saved by the Bell Story. He currently has a starring role in the Starz series Insomnia, and previously portrayed the teenage version of Dean Winchester on Supernatural.
His role on Degrassi: Tortured hockey prodigy Campbell Saunders. While an excellent hockey player, Campbell had issues with stress, anxiety, loneliness, and depression, the combination of which led him to hang himself on school grounds where his body was found by another student.
Samantha Munro
Where you know her from: Munro played Shannen Doherty in The Unauthorized Beverly Hills, 90210 Story, and co-stars in the Netflix series Between with former iCarly actress Jennette McCurdy, as well as former fellow Degrassi cast members Jordan Todosey (who played Adam Torres), and Justin Kelly (who played Jake Martin).
Her role on Degrassi: Anya MacPherson, a follower who eventually learned to stand up for herself. Anya suffered from dyslexia, and dabbled with cocaine, before deciding to pursue basic training in order to join the Canadian Forces.
