A Grammy nomination is the highest form of praise that a musician can get, and many, if not most artists strive to be included in the annual ceremony. While the awards may seem to be skewed towards the biggest names in the industry year after year, there are plenty of well-known, chart-topping acts that have never been up for a prize in their careers. It’s important that not everybody who performs well on the charts gets nominated, as the Recording Academy wants to ensure that the integrity of the Grammys is guarded and protected, and that means leaving out some popular singers and bands that millions love, but who might not be making Grammy-worthy music (at least according to some).

After yesterday's (December 6) 2017 nomination announcement, here are 8 musical acts that you might be surprised have never been nominated for a Grammy in their careers.
One Direction
This one is both difficult to believe, and at the same time...not so much. 1D took over the world the minute they released their debut single “What Makes You Beautiful,” which was a Top 10 hit almost everywhere people heard it. The fivesome (and then foursome after Zayn made his abrupt exit) charted an incredible four No. 1 albums in both the US and the UK, and yet they have never been critical favorites. In their home country, the band has been nominated for eleven BRIT Awards, which is essentially the UK equivalent of a Grammy. They’ve collected five trophies, but that hasn’t helped them warm to Grammy voters.
The Who
Okay, this one still makes me angry every time I think about it, and I usually have a lot of faith in the Grammys. The Who, one of the most successful and critically adored bands that has ever recorded rock music, has never been nominated for a Grammy. Not a single one. The group's 16 Top 40 hits and nine Top 10 albums were apparently not enough to impress voters, and despite the fact that each of the members is still respected to this day, and several of their recordings have been bestowed with special achievement prizes, The Who remain perhaps the greatest gaffe when it comes to the history of the Grammys.
Jason Derulo
It’s a shame that the Recording Academy did away with the gender-focused categories, because if they’d remained, Jason Derulo probably would have been nominated for something by this point in his career. The singer, who never seems to disappear from the spotlight completely, has never seen his name placed among the nominees when they are revealed every year, and that’s a shame, as he’s a truly talented man. He can sing, he can dance and he comes out with hit after hit, but none of them have managed to impress those in charge of nominations just yet.
Selena Gomez
Again, this is somewhat surprising given how successful she has been in the music world, and yet not entirely shocking. Gomez had a somewhat uninspiring start when it comes to her music career, but after a while, things started to go right, and her output got better and better. It was when she went out on her own, ditching her band (known as “the Scene”) that she started charting serious hits and earning some respect. That might be the case, but she still has yet to add a Grammy nom to her credit.
The Strokes
While they may be on again, off again, the group is undeniably influential when it comes to all things rock, and yet they've never been recognized properly by the Academy. The band, which wasted no time in becoming the coolest thing to come out of New York City's music scene in decades when they first launched, has only released a handful of albums, but none of them have even been up for golden trophies. To be fair, The Strokes' frontman has collected one on his own, but the rest of his bandmates will have to continue to wait.
Spice Girls
It would be easy to suggest that the fact that the Spice Girls were never nominated for a Grammy was because they only released three albums in their short time together, but when you consider how many worldwide smash hits they released and how good the music really was, that reasoning doesn’t really fly. Pop acts don’t often get recognized by critics and those in the industry for creating the best music in any given year (hence why One Direction is also on this list), but some of those songs were so great! I mean, really, how was “Wannabe” not nominated for Record of the Year? With a partial reunion on the way, anything is possible for the future.
Janis Joplin
She's now nothing short of an icon, but Janis Joplin was never actually nominated for a Grammy in her lifetime. The rocker's output was cut short at just four albums due to her untimely and early passing, but even that small amount of music was enough to change the world. In the years since she left us, Joplin has maintained her status as one of the best there ever was, and while several of her recordings have been recognized by the Recording Academy in some context, she has still never been properly nominated for a competitive Grammy.
Fifth Harmony
In just a short few years since they all met and came together on The X Factor USA, Fifth Harmony has become a force to be reckoned with. They sell out massive shows, they're social media stars, and more recently, they've hit new highs on both the albums and the singles tallies. 2016 was perhaps their best year yet, and many people expected that America's reigning girl group would finally be nominated for a Grammy, if not actually win, but alas, it seems as though 5H will have to wait yet again. Even the powerhouse international smash "Work From Home" couldn't muster a nod in any category, which is a shame, as it's not only one of the most popular tracks of the year, it's one of the best.
