With just a few days to go before the nominees for the 2017 Grammy Awards are announced, the entire music industry is abuzz with predictions and guesses about who is sure to be honored, who should be nominated and which artists may or may not surprise the world by garnering a nod. While it’s impossible to be certain about almost anything when it comes to the Grammys, there are a handful of names that simply must be named, because they were the movers and shakers of the past year in music.
If you’re keeping track of the Grammys and suring up your predictions, here are a 8 artists you’d be a fool to exclude.
Adele
What She’ll Be Nominated For: Album, Record, and Song, of the Year, Best Pop Vocal Album, Best Solo Pop Vocal Performance
If Adele releases music, Adele gets nominated for Grammys. It’s just that simple, and it’s certainly going to happen again this year. The British superstar will not only be up for some trophies, she’ll probably wind up one of the most-nominated people of the year. She’s definitely going to be up for three of the four major awards thanks to the massive popularity of her album 25 and its lead single “Hello,” and she’ll also probably win out in the pop categories as well.
Beyoncé
What She’ll Be Nominated For: Album, Record, and Song of the Year, Best Urban Contemporary Album, Best Music Video
Is there ever a year when Beyoncé isn’t nominated for at least one Grammy? If there is, it’s rare, and 2017 will not be one of those years. The singer’s semi-surprise album Lemonade could not have been better-timed with its televised release, and everybody loved it. Lead single “Formation” is the standout track from the record, but it might not be the only one that receives recognition. Bey’s albums vary in style enough that she can sometimes see her name end up in several different categories, and this coming ceremony might see her do just that.
Chance The Rapper
What He’ll Be Nominated For: Album of the Year, Best New Artist, Best Rap Album
2016 was a massive year for Chance, as it was when he finally broke out in a very big, very meaningful way. His album Coloring Book became the first to debut in the Top 10 on the Billboard 200 based entirely and solely on streams, which forced the Recording Academy to alter its rules, finally allowing streaming-only titles to be eligible for prizes. With that new change, there’s little reason why Chance and Coloring Book shouldn’t both be nominated, and he may even wind up in the top category.
David Bowie
What He’ll Be Nominated For: Album, Record, and Song of the Year, Best Rock Album, Best Rock Performance, Best Rock Song, Best Music Video
The legendary rock star has only won a single Grammy in his lifetime, and that was for a music video, not even for his music. Now that Bowie has passed away, voters are surely going to do their best to honor his legacy, and the last album he released in his lifetime, by nominating his album Blackstar, and likely the single “Lazarus,” though the album’s title track is also a standout and a possibility.
Drake
What He’ll Be Nominated For: Album and Record of the Year, Best Rap/Sung Performance, Best Rap Album
2016 belongs to Drake, there is no arguing that, and while his output was good, but perhaps not the absolute best music he’s ever made, it will probably win him some more Grammys in early 2017. Views will likely earn a nomination for Album of the Year, and his single “One Dance” was probably too big for the Academy to ignore in a category like Record of the Year. Beyond that, his name will surely appear in every rap vertical there is.
Justin Bieber
What He’ll Be Nominated For: Record and Song of the Year, Best Pop Vocal Album, Best Pop Solo Performance
He might be one of the most successful pop singers of all time, but Bieber has only ever won a single Grammy, and he’s only been recognized three times in total. That number will probably rise when nominations are announced in just a few days, as his last album, Purpose, was one of the biggest of his career, especially when it came to the singles. Purpose could grab a spot in the pop album category, and his chart-topping songs “Sorry” and “Love Yourself” could end up in Record and Song of the Year, respectively...though that’s a big could.
Rihanna
What She’ll Be Nominated For: Best Pop Duo-Group Performance, Best Urban Contemporary Album
RiRi is a big Grammy favorite, and her luck probably won’t change in 2017. Her Drake collaboration “Work,” which topped the Hot 100 for nine weeks earlier this year, will probably collect at least one or two nominations, and her album Anti could also be honored, though if her team submits it for the same category as Beyoncé, she probably doesn’t have a great chance of winning that one.
Sia
What She’ll Be Nominated For: Best Pop Vocal Performance, Best Pop Vocal Album
She may be one of the biggest and most successful songwriters in the game right now, but believe it or not, Sia has never won a Grammy. That should change in 2017, though it’s anybody’s guess if it actually will or not. Her album This Is Acting is eligible, and it is truly one of the best pop records that’s in the running, and she finally made it to number one with her song “Cheap Thrills” earlier in 2016. Depending on whether or not her team submits the solo, album version of the song or the one featuring Sean Paul that the world heard is yet to be seen, but whichever one ends up being sent to Grammy voters, it’s probably going to be nominated.
