With 2017 just around the corner, it’s time to start looking and listening for who might be the next big thing in every genre of music. It’s impossible to know which artists will come out of nowhere and surprise the world with a masterpiece, or which musicians might disappoint when their time to shine seems to come, but it is exciting to look around and discover new talent and guess which ones have the best chances at breaking through.
Nashville is filled with young singer-songwriters just waiting to be discovered, and so many of them have their own special sound and style. It was difficult coming up with a list of eight new names for this ranking simply because there truly are a ton of country artists that all deserve the attention, but here are a handful that seem as if they could explode at any minute.
Russell Dickerson
Even if the up-and-comer never truly makes it big, he’s sure to have one song that country music enthusiasts will be begging to hear for years to come in the form of “Yours.” In fact, the song has already been played so many times, and Dickerson clearly knows he’s onto something with the romantic tune, because he re-recorded the track and created a special “wedding version,” which is the perfect soundtrack to a nuptial slow dance.
High Valley
Brotherly duo High Valley are already somewhat well-known in their home country of Canada, but they haven’t crossed over into the US market in a major way just yet. The group, which used to be three members until brother Bryan stepped out, leaving just Brad and Curtis Rempel to continue the brand, has dropped five albums, including 2016’s Dear Life, and while they have charted nine top 100 hits up north, the same can’t be said for America, though it’s only a matter of time...
Ryan Hurd
Hurd is the kind of artist that is being created by streaming, so it’s clear that the young people really have a thing for him. The singer-songwriter has only properly released three tracks — “We Do Us,” “Love In A Bar” and “City Girl” — and all three have racked up millions of plays on Spotify in 2016 alone. With that kind of sustained success, it isn’t difficult to imagine that whenever Hurd decides to release a full collection, be it an EP or an album, it will be played over and over again by millions.
Aubrie Sellers
Sellers dropped her debut full-length New City Blues in January of 2016, and while it didn’t make much of an impact on the charts and it can’t be considered a best-seller, the record got her name out there in a very powerful way. The musician, who is actually Lee Ann Womack’s daughter, is helping to create a new genre that blends country with a truly grungy rock and roll, which helps her stand out in Nashville.
Ward Thomas
Earlier this year, Ward Thomas became the first British country act to score a Number One album in their home nation, proving that they’re big enough to make the jump over to the US. The twin sisters have talent, a growing fan base and both a sound and a look that could catapult them to international fame. America has already accepted Australian country artists (think Keith Urban), so isn’t it time we got some more English talent on this side of the pond?
Runaway June
With the Dixie Chicks still doing their own thing separate from one another (except, of course, for when Beyoncé comes calling and needs their help at the CMAs), there is room in the country music world for a new trio of all ladies to succeed, and Runaway June could be just that group. The three women —Naomi Cooke, Hannah Mulholland, and Jennifer Wayne — only have one track out, but “Lipstick” is so catchy, it could be enough to hook you from the first guitar pluck.
Trent Harmon
We haven’t heard a whole lot from Trent Harmon since he won the final season of American Idol, but I mean, come on! He won American Idol! How could I not put him on this list? In the months since the show wrapped its incredible 15-season run and Harmon signed a major label deal, he has been hard at work on what will eventually be his debut full-length, and already the country world seems to be interested. Both of his two singles — “Falling” and “There’s A Girl” — have broken into the Top 40 on the country-specific chart, and with plenty of resources behind him, there might be another Idolfavorite in the country world soon enough.
Ryan Follese
Country-pop seems to have been missing something since Taylor Swift made the transition to pure pop, and somebody needs to step in and take the reigns. Former Hot Chelle Rae member Ryan Follese could do a fantastic job in such a role, as he’s already had major success in the music industry with unavoidable pop hooks. HCR are best known for their Top 10 hit “Tonight, Tonight,” and if you remember that tune, you’ll get a sense for just how hook-heavy Ryan’s country-leaning solo work is.
