10 Classic Nu Metal Fashions We Miss

When rock met hip-hop, and combined the most aggressive aspects of both, nu metal was born. Some people loved it, a lot of people loathed it, but at one point in the late ‘90s it was one of the preeminent genres in all of music, dominating everything from rock playlists to TRL.

Like most genres of music, nu metal wasn’t just a sound — there was also a look that went with it. Whether you were doing it all for the “Nookie,” or felt like you “Got The Life,” chances are there were some very specific pieces in your wardrobe that let the world know you were a nu metal fan.

Here are 10 such fashion items from the nu metal era that we absolutely loved.

Wallet Chains

Our wallets may have only contained $14 bucks, a condom of questionable usability and a Blockbuster card, but we kept a chain on that thing that was strong enough to pull construction equipment out of the Grand Canyon. Thieves stood no chance of renting videos in our name!

Super Baggy Jeans

No one can argue about the comfort factor here. Sure, you’d trip over your own jeans, sometimes quite often, but an inseam that went down to your knees felt like freedom, and with pockets so large they could fit everything you could possibly want to carry, including multiple family members, super baggy jeans were the ultimate carry-all.

Recently, the legendary baggy jeans company JNCO relaunched. This is a comeback that needs to happen.

Tracksuits

Nu metal icons Korn became synonymous with tracksuits.

Due in large part to frontman Jonathan Davis’ love of old school hip-hop, you’d always see him rockin’ Adidas tracksuits in videos, photo shoots, and while performing at shows … that is, until Puma swooped in and gave the band an endorsement deal.

Of course, it was just a change in brand, Davis still track suited up!

Adidas Sneakers

Another indication of nu metal’s appreciation of old school hip-hop was the number of bands that wore Adidas sneakers.

While the ‘80s had Run–D.M.C. rapping about “My Adidas,” in the ‘90s we had Korn taking a bit of a different angle with “A.D.I.D.A.S.”

The Backwards Red Yankees Cap

Whether you consider it iconic, or infamous, Fred Durst’s red Yankees cap became one of Limp Bizkit’s calling cards. While the non-traditional nature of the hat upset a lot of Yankees fans, it was Durst and crew, not Jay Z, who “made the Yankee hat more famous than a Yankee can.”

Facial Piercings

We’re not talking about pierced ears here, we’re talking about stuff like the double labret vertical chin piercings Disturbed’s David Draiman rocked (and still rocks).

You know your piercings are unique, and you’re the man, when nobody else dares to copy your style.

Unique Hair

Dreads, braids, spikes, multiple colors, and whatever the heck was going on with what was on top of Wayne Static’s head (the Static X frontman is pictured above); nu metal was open to plenty of creativity when it came to hair, and with the exception of the artists who shaved their heads, a large percentage went wild with it.

Equally Unique Beards

I’d say nu metal took the concept of the soul patch to new levels, but what it really did was make the soul patch look like a Chia Pet that had only just been started a week ago. Nu metal bands went crazy with unique facial hair, as evidenced by System of a Down bassist Shavo Odadjian’s trademark beard (pictured above).

Back in Black

There’s always been something simplistically great about the color black, especially when it comes to clothing. Black goes with everything, including more black! This is why it was so fantastic that nu metal made black a staple of our wardrobes once again.

Horror Masks

OK, this one is kind of band-specific, but shout out to Slipknot for making Halloween, and horror, masks a year-round thing. They weren’t the originators of this, but they’ve always had their own unique way of utilizing their masks, and creating character concepts for each of them.

We appreciate a band that lets creativity reign supreme.
