At the Grammys last night (February 12), a number of high-profile artists finally took home prizes. Solange, Twenty One Pilots and even newcomers like Maren Morris are all now Grammy-winning artists, and nothing they do from now on will ever change that. I sincerely congratulate them, but there are still plenty of artists who truly deserve this award, but who have yet to win one.
Here are 8 artists for whom the time to win a Grammy has come...and gone already!
Katy Perry
Despite the fact that she is one of the biggest pop stars of the day, and one of the most successful of all time when looking at record sales and charting positions, Katy Perry has never won a Grammy. This isn’t because she’s never been nominated — in fact, she’s been up for a trophy 13 times — so at this point it’s strange that she’s never gone home a winner if only because of the odds.
It’s almost a statistical impossibility that Katy will never win a golden gramophone, but she’ll have to continue to wait, as her time hasn’t come just yet.
Bjork
The odd Icelandic artist in every sense of the word has been nominated almost too many times to count, but she’s never won. In fact, when it comes to those names that have collected the most nominations without a win, hers isn’t quite at the top, but it’s getting up there.
The modern singer, songwriter, designer, and artist- of all kinds has been up for a Grammy 14 times, with many of her noms taking up space in the alternative categories, but she has sadly never come away a champion, at least not when it comes to having gold in her hand.
Nicki Minaj
The reigning female rapper of the ages — and one of the biggest names the genre has ever known, regardless of gender — is also waiting for her turn to put a Grammy on her trophy shelf at home. Minaj is nominated almost every year, and to date, she’s been nominated 10 times, but the Recording Academy has never awarded her a prize.
She is sure to win one of these days, either with a song that is wholly her own, or thanks to one of her incredibly inventive guest features, which she is perhaps best know for, even to this day.
Snoop Dogg
Believe it or not, Snoop Dogg has been nominated an incredible 17 times, and yet he’s never won a Grammy. In fact, he is tied for the record of the most nominations without triumphing once. The man has been a mainstay in hip-hop for decades now, and he’s released some of the coolest, the catchiest and the downright best the genre has ever heard, and yet he doesn’t have any gramophones awards to show for it!
He has been up for a prize both thanks to his own work, as well as for songs and albums he was featured on — he was even nominated for Album of the Year as a guest vocalist on Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream (remember “California Gurls”?), but alas, no wins...yet!
Sara Bareilles
The queen of piano-pop is a critical favorite, and she creates exactly the kind of music that Grammy voters typically love to reward, but yet she’s never collected an award. She has been nominated six times, with one of those being a shocking nom for the highly coveted Album of the Year, though she didn’t end up on top.
Earlier this year, Bareilles was also nominated for a Tony Award for writing the music for the musical Waitress. Just as has been the case time and time again at the Grammys, she went home an honored nominee, but not a winner.
Sia
One of the most sought-after songwriters in the business, who has turned herself into a serious pop star in just the past few years, does not have a Grammy to her name, which is a true shame.
She has been nominated thanks to her own singles, as a featured guest (on Flo Rida’s “Wild Ones”), and with the band that first helped her rise to prominence, Zero 7, but none of these resulted in wins.
Demi Lovato
While she has only ever racked up a single nomination (which came this year for Best Pop Vocal Album), I still firmly believe it’s about time we give this woman some recognition.
She isn’t just another pop singer, she’s one of the few ones who can really, truly sing, which is something she’s been proving to us over and over for the past few years.
Any of the Jonas Brothers
At this point I don’t even really care which one gets it, just give a Grammy to one of them! Any of them! The teen heartthrobs were nominated together back when they were recording and releasing music as a trio, but only once, and they didn’t win. In fact, they were up for the Best New Artist trophy, which that year was bestowed upon Adele (boy did they get that one right).
Since then, neither the trio, nor either of the brothers that went out on their own have been nominated again. Nick and Joe, with his band DNCE, have both created some great music, and at least a nomination seems like it’s in order soon.
