Reality TV can be a great gig, though the fame that comes with a hit show doesn’t typically last. The smart ones are able to transition from the drama needed to keep a show going to other ventures, whether those are acting, designing clothes, modeling, or for some, music. Plenty of reality stars and starlets have tried their hands (and voices) at being pop or dance musicians, and a few have actually made something happen, though most, if not all of them have discovered that success in the music industry can be as fleeting as in the reality world. Here are 8 such stars.
Paris Hilton
Remember when Paris Hilton ruled the world? She was one of the first real celebrities that was famous for essentially nothing but being rich and famous (and of course for a certain tape that leaked), and she was also one of the first to turn it into a music career… one that actually took off for a while.
In 2006, she released her self-titled debut album on Warner Bros., and it made it all the way to No. 6, while lead single “Stars Are Blind” was a Top 20 hit. Since then, she has signed to Cash Money Records, which is owned by rapper Birdman, but the songs she’s released since then have all been dance-focused duds. The real bummer? Paris was actually kind of great.
Heidi Montag
She may have been one of the supporting characters on The Hills, but for a minute, it looked Heidi Montag she was going to become the breakout musical star of the bunch.
There was plenty of buzz around her burgeoning music career...until the album was released and nobody bought it. Superficial reportedly sold just over 1,000 copies, which has got to hurt considering the fact that she spent $2 million on it.
Kim Kardashian
She may be married to one of the most successful, most decorated, and most influential musicians of our time, but that doesn’t mean that Kim K’s music is any good. She only released one song in her entire life as a singer, “Jam (Turn It Up),” and that was enough, thank you very much.
The dance tune was poorly reviewed upon its release, and she never stepped into a studio again. Kim K seems to understand how bad it was, because the reality star has expressed regret about even trying.
Ali Lohan
The younger sister of Lindsay Lohan, who now goes by the name Aliana, has been in and out of music for some time now, and if all goes well, we may be hearing more from her soon.
The singer/model first popped onto the scene a decade ago with Lohan Christmas, which was truly nothing to sing about (ha!), and then two years later with her proper first pop song “All The Way Around,” which wasn’t half bad. It’s been a long time since then, and in interviews recently she’s described her new sound as much more “western,” but she has yet to share a full release.
Brooke Hogan
While she and her family were enjoying the pleasures of fame thanks to their reality show Hogan Knows Best, and then Brooke’s own spin-off Brooke Knows Best, the youngest sibling launched a music career, which was never met with critical love, but which did pan out for just a moment.
She placed one single within the Top 40: 2006’s “All About Us,” and she’s dropped two full-lengths. Just recently (meaning within the last two years), she tried her hand at country with “Girlfriend,” though it seems her time in the spotlight might be over.
Kelly Osbourne
Of all the people on this list, Kelly Osbourne’s musical career might have been the most notable. She was well-known in the US, though the songs didn’t chart very well, but in her home country of the UK, she was a certified star for a while.
She placed four singles — “Papa Don’t Preach,” “Shut Up,” “One Word,” and chart-topper “Changes” — in the Top 15, which is fairly impressive for any artist, even one with a well-known name going for her. As she began booking more TV gigs she stepped away from music, which is a shame, because a lot of those tracks really worked!
Kim Zolciak
Many of the reality stars on this list were able to churn out at least one or two really catchy, well-produced tunes, but that’s not the case for everyone who gains some level of fame on TV who then finds their way into a recording studio.
The star of The Real Housewives Of Atlanta only released a few songs, but one stands out above all: “Don’t Be Tardy For The Party,” which is still played to this day...by a few select fans, and those wanting to listen to how god awful it was.
Tan Mom
After gaining nationwide attention for allegedly bringing her daughter to a tanning salon and getting into legal trouble for that very indiscretion, Tan Mom wasted no time in capitalizing on her C-level fame.
She partnered up with musician Adam Barta to “sing” and star in the music video for “Life Of The Party,” which could be one of the worst pieces of music ever created. No matter! It’s actually incredibly entertaining to watch because it’s so bad, and she developed something of a cult following in the gay community after the video’s release.
