The Parrots Can't Wait to Head to SXSW

The Parrots will be the first to tell you that they've had to overcome some obstacles when they got started as a band. However, with the release of their debut album, Los Niños Sin Miedo, the Madrid trio prove that they really are a group of fearless men. We had the chance to chat with The Parrots to learn more about their new album, what makes them tick and what they're favorite parts are of touring. And we quickly found out that while they love to play live, they also love partying it up. Find out more about the Spanish indie rock band below.

Hometown: Madrid

Let's start at the beginning. How did the band get together?

We met in Madrid. We started hanging around in the same places, and soon after that we decided to play some music together. And when we had some songs, [we] started to get shows.

Why did you call your album, Los Niños Sin Miedo?

A friend of [ours] used to call us that all the time, trying to joke about how we dealt with stuff and how we were serious about playing and being in the band. We were making the songs for the record, and it stuck to us a lot.

What's your favorite song to perform right now and why?

"No Me Gustas Te Quiero." We love how even when it is a kind of slow song compared to most of our others, we get completely insane; and I think that people feel the same way. And it is also great to see people trying to sing the lyrics.

The lyrics are in English and Spanish. Why did you want to make the record bilingual?

We didn't intend to do it, but those lyrics had to be in Spanish. We felt it was the right thing to do. And same for the record name, we're very proud of the place we were raised and of our culture and maybe its a subconscious homage.

You've talked about the difficulty of being a rock band in Madrid. Why is that? And where do you feel you fit in the Madrid music scene?

[It] is not just in Madrid. But in Spain, the government is very hard with culture and especially in music, and makes it impossible to many people involved, including promoters and venues. That terrible perspective made us stick together with other bands, artists and other people interested in making a better city.

You guys did a split single with Hinds. How did that come about?

We've been friends since forever. And for both of us, it seemed like a cool thing to do. We were starting bands together, playing shows, and one day, we were doing a gig together, and we just decided to do it.

You've played SXSW and playing it again. What are you looking forward to in Austin?

Hotel Vegas, El Sapo Cantina, new friends, Spider House, Magnolia, tacos, Beerland, Lone Star, Micheladas, records and watching 50 shows in five days.

What's the best part of touring for you guys?

Partying with new people everyday, maybe in a different country, maybe having a croissant, or chips, not knowing what day of the week it is, with the best people around you, all of it is great.

Dream gig?

Barcelona 92 Montserrat Caballé, Freddie Mercury and us. Perfect. It was sold out.

What's next for The Parrots?

We're playing some shows in New York and Texas in march and until then we will be writing more songs and getting them recorded, so playing a lot and partying a lot.
