Looking through Allday's Instagram or catching one of his videos, the 26-year-old Australian hip-hop artist might look chilled out and nonchalant, but he's actually one hell of a hustler garnering fans in his homebase with his 2014 debut album, Startup Cult. And now he's made the move from Adelaide to Los Angeles in hopes to bring his melodic rhymes to America audiences with his sophomore effort, Speeding, which is set to release on April 21.
"I had more money," he told Myspace with a few laughs as he spoke about the difference between the two records. "I had a label. You spend a lot more money, you get more."
We found out some interesting facts about Allday. Hop to the next page to read 10 things you should know about the budding rapper.
The Monkees and Shaq Were His Intros to Music
"I remember getting a CD player for eighth birthday, and my mom gave me two albums," he said. "It was The Monkees' greatest hits and Shaquille O'Neal's album Respect. Two pretty horrible albums that I enjoyed at length. That's what got me started."
His Cousins Introduced Him to Hip-Hop
"I got into it at school when I was 10 or 11, and I discovered an MP3 of Lil Wayne. I remember downloading 'Next Episode' by Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg. And I guess it was also around when my cousins would be around me and listen to Eminem, they'd play rap music when they'd babysit me. I just started thinking I was a rapper from right about then."
His First Recording Was to an Asher Roth Track
While he was already writing lyrics at 10, he didn't actually get in front of the mic till he was much older. "The first thing I ever recorded when I was 17 or 18 was when I rapped over the beat of 'I Love College,' that Asher Roth song."
Lil Wayne is His Favorite Rapper
"I think lyrically I'm influenced Big L and Talib Kweli when I was young," he said. "I was into that multi-syllable rappers like that. But Lil Wayne would be my favorite rapper as well. I love going between singing and rapping. He's totally my favorite rapper."
Adelaide Has a Solid Hip-Hop Scene
While some places like Harlem, Atlanta and Compton are viewed as centers of hip-hop, Allday's hometown, Adelaide, can be put in that category as well.
"It's pretty big," he explained. "Adelaide, especially, the mainstream culture is basketball and hip-hop. It's a weird thing. For whatever reason, it just works. It was big there growing up."
He Won't Be Boxed Into One Genre
"I never really fit into a scene," he said. "I grew up around people who were hip-hop based. I had my education in old school hip-hop and decide how much that to utilize in my own music and what direction to go in. That kind of thing."
He Likes to Take His Time During the Recording Process
"Sometimes I recorded things too many times maybe or worked on the beats for too long," he admitted. "I'm not really one of those people who can make six songs a night. I'm quite slower so hopefully I can be quicker one the next one."
He Met Japanese Wallpaper at the Airport
So how did "In Motion," his collaboration with Japanese Wallpaper come together? While Allday enjoyed the fellow Aussie's music, the two met coincidentally at a random place.
"I met him at an airport actually," he said. "I don't remember how we ended up in the studio together. I could have just asked him. He just has this great set of beautiful sounds. I don't know how he does it, but he has this recognizable style. So that's why instead of just having him as a producer, he does sing on it. I just put 'featuring Japanese Wallpaper' because anyone who hears it and knows him, knows it's him. It's pretty fun and we're making another song as well."
And He Believes "In Motion" is THE TRACK on the New Album
"To be honest, 'In Motion' is probably the best song," he admitted. "If you don't like 'In Motion,' you probably won't like the album."
He Hopes We Like His Music
"Whether or not Americans will get into my music, that remains to be seen," he said. "I hope they do."
