Before selfies were a thing, these people turned self-obsession into a form of art. Like characters in some unwritten R-rated fairytale for the cyber age, the likes of Jeffree Star and Audrey Kitching created a world of their own, filled with neon colors, In3rn3T $p3ak and fixation on gore and glitter. A decade later, the world is filled with wannabe “influencers,” self-proclaimed “opinion leaders” and run-of-the-mile “lifestyle bloggers,” but what’s up with the original crème de la crème of social media?
Here's what everyone's Top 8 has been up to for the past 10 years.
Jeffree Star
The pink-haired, pop-loving and gothic-inspired singer-songwriter from OC was the Marilyn Manson of the Myspace generation. His sticky and sweet gender-bending ways turned Star into a proper cyber celebrity and propelled him to release a debut record Beauty Killer in 2009, which included a Nicki Minaj feature in “Lollipop Luxury.”
He hasn’t released new music in a few years now, but Star is following his other passion: make-up. Apart from running a beauty YouTube channel (his videos get over 1M views), he has his own cosmetics line. And yes, he still has killer pink hair.
Audrey Kitching
Just like her on-again off-again pal Jeffree Star, blogger/model/stylist/designer Audrey Kitching was making Myspace a brighter place with her pink hair and unique personality. Over the years Kitching successfully turned over to Instagram and Twitter, while having a very real career in fashion, working with H&M, Nylon, Diesel, MTV and many others.
She also has her own line of healing crystals called Crystal Cactus. And yup, you guessed it: you can get them at Urban Outfitters. As for her hair, it's still pink — just a few shades lighter.
Kiki Kannibal
The cautionary tale of social media, Kiki Kannibal’s rise to fame and eventual not-just-cyber bullying was covered by Rolling Stone back in 2011.
What made people call her a slut and try to punch her whenever they spotted her? Not much, apparently. Kiki rose to fame by simply posting photos of herself with all sorts of ridiculous hair and punk-girlish outfits. Although her family did have to move at one point following sexual assault and all the unhealthy attention to Kiki, the blogger didn’t abandon the internet. These days, apart from designing clothes and jewelry, she also runs a YouTube vlog and Twitter, where she mostly posts about fighting animal cruelty.
Zui Suicide
You can’t rule your cyber kingdom without a well-manicured right hand, so Audrey Kitching had to have an equally social media savvy sidekick. Steps in Zui Suicide, who joined Kitching for the YouTube reality show Trashy Life.
Apparently Zui loved the idea of being someone’s BFF so much that she also participated in Paris Hilton’s My New BFF TV show, where Hilton was literally auditioning girls to be her new bestie. Who knows what would have happened if Zui won the title. For starters, she probably wouldn’t keep a private Instagram account.
Hanna Beth
Another one of Audrey Kitching’s Top 8, Hanna Beth was an essential Myspace queen: blonde streaks, pouty lips, sexy poses and a love life that included dating Metro Station’s Trace Cyrus (yep, Miley’s brother).
After falling out with most of her Myspace squad, Beth befriended Demi Lovato, dated a bunch of musicians, got new lips and wrote a memoir called Covered in Glitter last year. If you’re more of a just-scrolling-through-the-pictures type, then you can follow her on Instagram here.
Millionaires
Let’s face it, Millionaires didn’t capture our hearts with their music, at least not just with that. They were very simply the epitome of the Myspace scene: huge bows on huge hair, LET’$ RAGE attitude, tattoos, dollar bills and countless stream of photo-ready-poses.
2007’s “I Like Money” was a breakthrough hit for Dani, Melissa Marie and Allison. What has followed was a sad example of Internet fame failing to match the real prospects of independent recording artists. The girls have spent several precious years trying to get their debut album off the ground, and by the time Tonight was finally released in 2013 by the Dani-less duo, the party was basically over for Millionaires and the rest of the Myspace kids. They’re still trying to make it happen though — their latest single came out in February.
Jac Vanek
You can’t be a scene queen without proper accessories and mid-00s Myspace was all about the bigger the better swag that spoke to your rebellious soul. No one knew it better than Jac Vanek, who got famous for selling bracelets with words like "FEARLESS" and “RUTHLESS” on them, and eventually all kinds of “attitude merchandise.”
These days her designing empire is as strong as ever and her Twitter reads “I make things that speak to your sassy soul.” You can take a look at her sassy offerings over at Instargram. Our pick? “Retired emo kid.”
