Top 5 Album Releases of the Week

We've got a number of bangers on this week's new music picks. First, there's Kendrick Lamar's follow-up to Untitled Unmastered, DAMN., while Little Dragon are back with their new set of tunes, Season High. Actress returns with his fifth studio album, AZN. Deep State get introspective with Thought Garden. And Prime Ministers bring us their new project, Assymetric.

Read more about the new albums below.

'DAMN.' - Kendrick Lamar

Whenever Kendrick Lamar releases something, we know that it'll be good. And although he's been pretty quiet about releasing details and tracks about his upcoming record, DAMN., what we know about it proves to make this another strong effort from the Compton rapper.

"Humble," the lead single off the project, is not only visually gratifying with the cornucopia of messages in the video, but also brings to light a lot of Kendrick's views on various topics. And while expressing your ideas through verses is obviously not a new concept, there are so many different issues from body image to police brutality that K.Dot touches on that makes you want to listen to it multiple times to get more of the meaning out of it. And even after playing the song again, there's still a lot to unpack to get a full picture of what he wants to convey on the song.

But that's the genius that we love about him. His command of the English language is undeniable and can express his points in ways that anyone can understand. And if you don't, you just clearly aren't listening. Since the release of "Humble," we haven't been able to hear too much else of the record. That is, until LeBron James shared samples of some songs on Instagram stories yesterday (April 13). While we're not too sure which songs he's previewing for us, there's one that he tagged "#Feel," which leads us to believe that Kendrick hasn't lost his love for melodies. And let's not forget that U2 and Rihanna are featured on the album, which should make for some interesting listening.

DAMN. is the album you'll need to listen this weekend, regardless of how much or little you like hip-hop. If not for the music, you'll walk away with something much deeper by the end of it.

'Season High' - Little Dragon

If there's a band who knows how to bring in the funk with some fuzzy guitars, it's Little Dragon. And they do a lot of it on their latest offering, Season High.

If you like your R&B mixed with a little spacey effects, then their record is the perfect one for you. While "Sweet" and "Strobe Light" will get you moving, Yukimi Nagano's vocals on songs like "High" and the moody "The Pop Life" bring in the sensuality that might help change the mood from the dinner table to the bedroom. Season High is another win from the Swedish band. But then again, when has music from them ever really steered us wrong?

'AZD' - Actress

Actress takes us into a new universe with his new album, AZD. Inspired by chrome and all the ideas and facets of it, the record definitely sounds like you're about to enter the world of Tron, with each song feeling like you've reached a new level and are getting closer and closer to the castle.

While the opening track really feels like the beginning of your trip, songs like "Runner" and "Dancing in the Smoke" are the perfect soundtracks for the different places you'll uncover. While the ambient and experimental sounds of the British musician may not be everyone's speed, it is an interesting sonic experience to try out. No matter what your thoughts are on electronic music, Actress' latest will take you somewhere you've never been before.

'Assymetric' - Prime Ministers

Looking for some good rock music with some soul? Well then Prime Ministers is the band for you, and their new record, Assymetric, is what you need on your playlist.

From their guitar-picking album opener, "Under No One Else," to hand-clapping thumper, "New Beginnings," the eight track LP will jolt you with that extra-needed energy in the afternoon. Then there's the twangy "Roots," which sounds a little bit country, but with that rock and roll vibe. Although Assymetric is the shortest record of this week's list, it's packed with the right amount of sounds to bring you into the weekend.

'Thought Garden' - Deep State

Deep State are back with their sophomore album, Thought Garden. The Athens, GA, band brings thought-out lyrics with rock and punk rhythms to make a nice follow-up to their first record, Nice.

While we get that punk energy in the opening tracks of the album, especially on "No Idea Pt. II" and "Mountains," it begins to slow down and get more melodic during the second half of the record. "Nothing Speaking" kicks that sonic route off with buzzing guitars and softer vocals and continues on "Idiot Waster" and their jazzier closing tune, "Urn."
