Gone are the days when one show could carry the title of the "It" show of the hour. For every Game of Thrones there’s a Westworld lurking somewhere around the TV sets’ corners. It’s not just hard keeping up with everything that’s on right now, it’s simply impossible. And with a sea of new series flooding our free time every season, it’s also hard to pick the truly worthy ones. But worry no more: we’ve narrowed it down to our Top 8 shows that are premiering this year.
Riverdale
Where: CW
When: January 26
By now it’s safe to say that The CW network knows a thing or two about teenagers, whether we’re talking about NYC-based bloggers (Gossip Girl), teenage vampires (The Vampire Diaries) or young superheroes (The Flash). No wonder the network was the best place for the reincarnation of classic comic book teenager Archie. Newcomer K.J. Apa had to dye his hair red for the iconic role, while the show promises a darker tone and a murder twist. No wonder Twin Peaks’ Madchen Amick is on board.
Imposters
Where: Bravo
When: February 7
Israeli stunner Inbar Lavi plays a seductive con artist who uses her looks and quick wit to get whatever she wants whenever she pleases in this black comedy. Uma Thurman is among the recurring cast, so the project is clearly a top priority for Bravo this television season. Watch it for the laughs and for Inbar Lavi’s beautiful accent, too.
The Good Fight
Where: CBS All Access
When: February 19
If you can’t get enough of vicious lawyers with razor-sharp tongues, perfect hair and an affection for whiskey, then there is great news coming your way. The Good Wife may be over, but legal drama is never-ending, so Christina Baranski is back as Diane Lockhart, who has to re-build her life from the ground up following a nasty financial crisis. Considering the show is brought by the very same people who created the story of Alicia Florrick, we’re sure there are also a bunch of personal struggles in the mix.
Crashing
Where: HBO
When: February 19
With Girls coming to an end this year and his successful Netflix show Love returning for its second season soon, Judd Apatow is as busy as ever. Yet he still has time for one more show. Crashing is a dramedy about a comedian (played by real-life comedian Pete Holmes), who has to overcome his wife leaving him. Will we ever see a day when Apatow doesn’t joke about love? Not that we would want him to.
Iron Fist
Where: Netflix
When: March 17
Expect a superhero overdose this year, since there’s a lot of comic book adaptations coming our way. Iron Fist is the fourth and final hero-themed Netflix shows leading up to The Defenders show (more on that in a bit). Iron Fist is a martial arts guru who can summon a mystical force that turns him into a superhero. The titular character will be played by Game of Thrones’ Finn Jones, while Jessica Henwick, Jessica Stroup and David Wenham will co-star. Jessica Jones’ Carrie-Anne Moss is also scheduled to make an appearance as a ruthless attorney Jeri Hogarth.
Star Trek: Discovery
Where: CBS
When: May
It’s been 12 years since the fifth Star Trek series, Enterprise, concluded its journey, so the new space saga was long overdue. Discovery was created by Bryan Fuller and Alex Kurtzman, whose collective portfolio features shows as diverse as Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, Hannibal, Pushing Daisies and Dead Like Me. Fuller also worked as a writer and producer on Star Trek: Voyager, so we don’t have to worry about him "getting" what the franchise is about. The casting is a bit more creative if you may. Rent’s Anthony Rapp as a science officer? Color us intrigued.
Twin Peaks
Where: Showtime
When: Sometime 2017
The town of Twin Peaks surely packed more mysteries than the show’s two original seasons allowed to unveil. It took a lot of persuasion of David Lynch and a whole lot of scheduling to get every piece in its place, but 2017 is the moment we will finally return to TV’s most cryptic and fascinating town. Expect to see all the familiar faces (from Kyle MacLachlan to Sheryl Lee) and a bunch of new ones. Sky Ferreira, Trent Reznor, Tim Roth, Laura Dern, Sharon Van Etten and Naomi Watts are just a few names that are reported to star in the new nine episodes.
The Defenders
Where: Netflix
When: Sometime 2017
The success of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage (and potentially Iron Fist) has exceeded Netflix and Marvel’s expectations and the shows received longer lives than originally expected, but one thing remains intact: they will all finally unite in an epic miniseries The Defenders. The superheroes, you guessed it, will defend the city of New York. The supporting cast of prior shows will return with the addition of Sigourney Weaver. We can already confirm that we will binge-watch the hell out of this 8-episode show once it hits Netflix.
