While everyone was busy placing bets on whether Beyoncé or Adele would take home the most Grammy awards, Jay Z and Diddy started the celebrations early and JK Rowling put Piers Morgan in his place. Here’s what you missed over the weekend.
Daydrinking with Hov and Diddy
Some of the biggest names in music were in attendance at the annual Roc Nation brunch on Sunday afternoon at the Owlwood Estate in Los Angeles. The 12,000 square-foot-mansion that was once home to iconic songbirds Sonny and Cher opened its doors to the who’s who of Hip Hop and R&B for an afternoon of great company, photo ops and of course the finest gourmet food. Hosted by Diddy and noticeably slimmer Roc Nation CEO Jay Z, the pre-Grammy bash was filled with a slew of famous faces.
Rihanna, Joe Jonas, Big Sean and Jim Jones socialized and hammed it up for social media. Making sure his guests were enjoying themselves, Diddy ran around with a huge grin and multiple bottles of expensive champagne, ensuring no one’s glass went empty. DJ Khaled, Pusha T and 2 Chainz enjoyed some stiff drinks while T.I., Fat Joe and Remy Ma shared some laughs with Diddy and Jay — presumably catching up on life since their heydays.
Missing from the festivities was a very pregnant Beyoncé, who spent the day resting at home prior to performing at the the evening’s awards ceremony. In her stead were Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams, left to carry out the Destiny’s Child — and celebrate Rolland’s birthday — reunion without her.
The Proof is in the Performance
At the conclusion of the Roc Nation brunch, the all-star guestlist parted ways to go get dolled up in their finest designer duds, only to meet again later during the Grammy Awards ceremony. Less about pomp and circumstance this year, fans were actually just excited to witness the outcome of the Beyoncé and Adele nominee showdown, and of course those precious moments featuring Beyoncé’s biggest fan, the always adorable Chance the Rapper.

Mother-to-be Beyoncé took it easy on the dance moves but refused to give up the dramatics of her set consisting of “Love Drought” and “Sandcastles.” Emerging from the stage as an ethereal goddess, surrounded by holographic dancers, flowing silks and stunning visuals. A dangerous chair-leaning stunt was even implemented as a means of ensuring that the audience was paying close attention. Queen Bey took home an astounding nine awards, making her the first female to ever be nominated across four different categories (rock, rap, pop, and urban contemporary) in the same year.
Poor Adele just can’t catch a break. For a second year, the soulful singer had a slight hiccup with her sound. As she began to sing her melodic rendition of “Fastlove” in honor of the late George Michael, she realized about one minute in that she was singing in the wrong key and stopped the performance. “I know it’s live TV — I’m sorry I can’t do it again, like last year. I’m sorry for swearing. I’m sorry for starting again. Can we please start it again? I’m sorry — I cant mess this up for him. I’m sorry, I’m sorry for swearing! I’m really sorry. Sorry.” The band started up again, and Adele continued on flawlessly to the continuous applause and cheers of her fellow musicians. By the end of the night, she walked away with a whopping five Grammys to add to her already large collection, dedicating the last one to a tearful Beyoncé.
Everyone loves Chance the Rapper, and on Sunday night he finally gained the recognition that The Academy owed him. Representing for the Rap category, the Chicago-native was up for seven nominations, taking home three well-deserved trophies for Best New Artist, Best Rap Performance for "No Problem" and Best Rap Album for Coloring Book before the show ended. His win for Coloring Book was one of the first steps into a new era of categories for the Grammys, due to its streaming-only status. Up until now, only traditionally released, physical albums were eligible for consideration.
JK Rowling for President
JK Rowling, the literary genius behind the Harry Potter franchise, courageously went in on television host and journalism troll Piers Morgan over the weekend, following his appearance on Bill Maher’s political HBO talk show. During the show’s segment on the US Government under Trump, British-born Morgan came to the defense of his good friend and former Celebrity Apprentice boss while discussing the controversial Executive Orders, he idiotically claimed “There is no Muslim Ban.” Fellow panelist and Australian comedian Jim Jefferies lost it, telling Morgan to “Fuck off.”
A very pleased Rowling took to her Twitter to express her pride in witnessing the moment, stating “Yes, watching Piers Morgan being told to fuck off on live TV is *exactly* as satisfying as I'd always imagined.” But Morgan didn’t appreciate the dig, and attempted to hit her where it hurt — in her magical, wizarding world of Harry Potter. However, after years of threats to her beloved novels and most recently a call to burn the books by angry Trump supporters, the pro-Clinton author wasn’t having any of it. Instead of continuing their ongoing dispute any further, Rowling found the ultimate way to shut Morgan down once and for all. Forget Batman — she’s the hero we deserve.
