When John Vesely, frontman of Secondhand Serenade, got into the studio to make the band's first album, Awake, it was a project that was something he wanted to do for himself. However, once it dropped in 2007, the album as well as its hit, "Vulnerable," took the California band into the spotlight. And now as Awake reaches its 10th anniversary, Secondhand Serenade released a special version of the record entitled Awake: Remixed & Remastered, 10 Years, 10,000 Tears Later on February 10.
To go along with it, he also made a short documentary recounting the making of that first LP as well as how it's made him who he is today. Vesley chatted with us about how the record as well as Myspace helped him garner the strong fanbase who've stayed by his side all these years.
"I would constantly be messaging back and forth with fans," Vesely tells Myspace, "and I would get all sorts of stories about how my music impacted them — all kinds of stories.
"There's one story of this soldier who actually was shot in the head in duty," he reveals. "And he had this long recovery. He said how important my music was during his recovery process. It was this long letter that was very thorough and sincere, and it really got to me. How much of an impact music made on people was just such an amazing thing to me."
While Vesley has performed songs from Awake many times, he actually hasn't listened to the recordings in a decade. So when he sat down with the album to remaster them again, it was quite the experience. "It was nice and nostalgic," he says. "It [brought me] back to when I was recording them and what it took to record them. And it brought up some things that I didn't quite remember or thought about in a long time. It was great and nostalgic in the very best way."
Secondhand Serenade just wrapped up some tour dates and plans to play more in the U.S. as well as head overseas. And as for new music, aside from the two that were added to the new Awake, he says, "I think I want to go ahead and do another acoustic album because I just fell in love with Awake again. And it seems that my fans' favorite albums of mine are Awake and A Twist in My Story, which is funny because they're both the acoustic ones. So I think I might stick with that for a little while."
But while we wait for the new material, enjoy the doc below.
