Meet Ryan and Kenny. They love weed and make awesome trap music. These are the two main things you need to know about LOUDPVCK. But if you’d like to learn more about the dudes behind the bass and the smoke, we’re here to help. Here's 10 things you should know about LOUDPVCK.
They’re All About 420
Let’s just get it off our chests: these two are loving their green lives. On the second minute of our laughter-filled Skype session, the LA-based duo introduced the unspoken third member of their collective: a 12-year-old bong. That’s the same bong they bonded over years ago. Rumor has it that since 2012, every time the clock strikes 4:20 a LOUDPVCK track plays somewhere in the world.
They Met at Berklee
If any aspiring musician is listening, then here’s a tip for you: do not quit school, ‘cause the music partner of your dreams may be sitting right next to you. Kenny and Ryan met at Berklee College of Music in Boston and couldn’t deny their creative chemistry. “Ryan was a piano major, I was a guitar major,” Kenny recalls. “We actually met on my first day there. I was looking for some weed and Ryan was sitting on the local pot dealer’s footsteps." Of course he was.
“The first time we hanged out, we went to Ryan’s house, smoked and listened to some records. I was blown away by his ability to know all the words to all these songs. I had no idea they had it in California. We knew all the same shit!”
But it’s not like their teachers at Berklee were all that supportive. “They were supper odd about our music. And we didn’t go there to learn what we’re doing now. Not sure they want to show us as their alumni, but they did start incorporating electronic music into their curriculum, which is cool.”
They Advise You to Be Creative
“The best thing we learned at school was more sociological rather than academic,” Ryan explains. “We wanted to create our own music. Playing your instrument is great, but you have to learn how to make your own music. Out of all the great musicians I know there are maybe one or two successfully playing their instrument. And then there’s Charlie Puth. He went to Berklee, too.”
Kenny adds, “Your network is your net worth. I knew I had to reach out to all the people I knew. And a lot of other kids were just making music and not thinking about pushing it forward.”
They’re Marrying Dance with Rap
Even though they were originally studying classic music and jazz, they quickly shifted their focus to the electronic wonderland. “Kenny was the only person at school I knew who was as passionate about it as I was, so we started sending each other all the beats we were making. Then years later we ended up starting our project. I was doing rap stuff, Ryan was doing dance stuff. We’re still giving each other insights on these two different worlds.”
They’re Social Media Pros
LOUDPVCK know the reality of the modern world: you can’t fill a club without doing an online Q&A or two. “We do meet-and-greet all the time,” Ryan recounts. “We do Ask Me Anythings at Reddit. We do live videos. We answer the same production and industry questions eight million times from the kids who want to blow up. The question is always 'How do I get big fast?' And for us it was always 'Who do we show our music to?' We were psyched about our shit rather than making shit to get to a certain place. I had no fucking clue how to DJ, I just wanted to share our music.”
In The Name of Pot
In case you don’t know, the term "loud pack" comes from the rap scene and means "really good pot." “But it can also mean any big amount of the legal substance of any sort,” the guys explain. “But originally it was how the guys in the south used to brag about their weed: “it smells loud.” We swear to god it was the first name we came up with. It worked perfectly. Then we spelled it that way so we would be googleble. And hey, our five year anniversary is coming up. We put the V in trap, we were the first ones!”
They Played Cannabis Cup Once
“We went to one of the Cannabis Cups. And were invited to judge it. We were just talking about how we need to be taking advantage of California’s new legalized marijuana as much as we can. We have so many connections in this world, we smoke so much weed and shit. It becomes like a real industry now.”
Naps and Girls Are a Must
We were expecting a “couch and a pot” angle when we asked the guys about a perfect night for them. “Sure, if it’s a night in. But if we’re talking a night out then it’s the following: get to the city, take an excellent nap, eat some food, get to the show 45 minutes before, drink Red Bull & vodkas, show’s sold out, front row is 60% hot girls, 40% people who love our music and then we fucking go ape-shit dropping dubstep, house, rap and trap for an hour. Perfect night out in LA is go out, dress a bit nicer, have some drinks with friends, go somewhere with 80% hot girls, not playing dubstep and trap.”
Their New Single is “Traffic”
Living in LA, it’s no wonder LOUDPVCK called their latest single “Traffic.” “When we’re stuck in traffic, we just devour Spotify. We listen to a lot of talk radio, podcasts, we love freeform journalism.” How about breaking into song-and-dance number like the ones in La La Land though? Ryan laughs and tell us he doesn’t sing in the car, but likes to do a little number in the shower from time to time. What’s his bathroom stomper? “(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher” by Jackie Wilson.
They Will Come to Your House
“We actually call our fans 'hurt' – because when you get high, you’re 'hurt.' We get offered every single drug ever. The kids come and share blunts with us before and after the shows. Two girls asked us for a threesome on our live shows on Twitter recently. Our fans are fucking insane. We always said we’re the dudes who will come to your house. We’re not the 'take a picture and piss of' kind. We like to really interact. We have smoked with 500 kids in front of our venue before. The other day this kid we know invited us over to his house. We arrive and his entire family is sitting in the kitchen smoking weed, there are pills and liquor everywhere. And the kid goes: 'Yo, wanna shoot some guns?' We didn’t know we’d walk in the middle of a gun-filled vodka-fueled party. We definitely thought we were gonna get dismembered that night.”
