In advance of their first trip to the USA, English quintet Phoria are premiering an unplugged version of their song "Melatonin" exclusively on Myspace. Stripped of the original's electronic ambience, the track treads new territory. The song has always sounded ethereal, but the delicate strum of acoustic chords in this unplugged version give it a more intimate feel. However, these aren't the only two incarnations of "Melatonin." According to singer Trewin Howard, the song has existed in many different realms before being officially released. "It started with the big joyous theme at the intro and probably went through 20 different arrangements before we got close to a finished tune." As for the lyrics, Howard says they have basis in reality. "The sleep theme in the lyrics came about after some very lucid dreams in Germany."
That said, Howard says he has no trouble sleeping and hasn't needed to supplement his sleep schedule with over the counter melatonin capsules, but dreams are a different matter. "I do have trouble forgetting my dreams sometimes."
With a debut appearance at the annual music festival SXSW just a week away, what is Howard most looking forward to? "To see and smell and feel America", he admits. "I have wanted to do that for a long time." Let's hope the jet-lag doesn't thwart them!
