'Where's the Revolution' - Depeche Mode
With over a dozen albums under their belt, it would seem that Depeche Mode have expressed everything they've ever wanted to over the past few decades. However, their latest album, Spirit, takes things to another level.
First off, they teamed up with James Ford of Simian Mobile Disco for the album's production. And while it's clearly a Depeche Mode album, it has elements that are a tinge more modern while keeping the essence of this iconic band. But instrumentals aside, the British musicians tackle the current political climate as well as the state of the world today. The lead single, "Where's the Revolution," has been making an impact not only on the charts but also on fans' minds. As you go from track to track, it's obvious that they have a lot to say. And even though this was recorded before the-Donald Trump and Brexit periods, the alt-rock trio have been noticing how things have been making the masses unhappy — as we hear in "Poorman." Meanwhile, "Worst Crime," keeps no one safe from accountability.
The band says that we are all responsible for what's currently going on. Despite what your political leanings are, Depeche Mode's Spirit is just one of those records that will move you. What direction will it take you? That's ultimately up to you.
'Blossom' - Milky Chance
Blending musical styles isn't a new concept. However, when Milky Chance do it, the music sounds like something so new yet a bit familiar. And after four years since Sadnecessary, the German duo are back to their electronic folk ways with Blossom.
Similar to how they drew us in with the 2013 record, Blossom takes pop music to new heights with songs like "Firebird." Not only do you instantly groove to the song, but you also can't deny the talent behind that acoustic guitar solo -- something we don't hear too much on that instrument. While "Cocoon" and "Doing Good" are the band's current singles, tunes like "Clouds" and "Bad Things," featuring Izzy Bizu, are uptempo, jazzy tracks that will have your hips moving in no time. And then there's "Alive," which carries a strong bass that gives the song lots of body and soul. Need something to chill out to? Blossom is the answer.
'Things I've Never Said' - Frances
If there's one artist on this week's list who wears her heart on her sleeve, it's Frances. Although interviews have shown her to be full of smiles, laughs and cheer, her debut album, Things I've Never Said, will make you want to grab that box of tissues.
From the moment you press play on the LP opener, "Don't Worry About Me," the gentleness on the first verse, which is done with no instrumentals, immediately touches your heart and even gives it a little squeeze. The piano and harmonizing voices join in, making the song sound a lot fuller. That's the magic that emits from Frances. Although still in her early 20s, the UK singer-songwriter has been penning tunes since she was 12. So at this point, she's a pro when it comes to putting lyrics to music, right? And perhaps that's why she isn't afraid to put those emotions out there. While the record is filled with ivory-driven ballads like "Cloud 9" and the LP closer, "The Last Word," there is a good amount of upbeat pop songs like bouncy "No Matter" and uplifting song, "Drifting." With Things I've Never Said, Frances is, without a doubt, going to be 2017's breakout artists.
'Together We Are Stronger' - Counterfeit
If you're looking for something that will shake you silly this weekend, then Counterfeit's record, Together We Are Stronger, is the right album for you. Each of the 10 tracks are packed with buzzing guitars, heavy drums and strong vocals from lead singer, guitarist and founding member Jamie Campbell Bower. And if that name sounds familiar, then you've probably seen Twlight, Mortal Instruments: City of Bones or Camelot.
Despite Jamie's acting abilities, let's get back to the music. Listening to "As Yet Untitled," he does a killer job at the guitar solo. But with Tristan Marmont, Roland Johnson, Sam Bower and Jimmy Craig, Together We Are Stronger is a solid set of punk and rock songs that not only are heavy but also have some passionate melodies running through them. After listening to this one, you'll likely want to find out when they will be playing in a city near you.
'Rough Roads' - Top Down
And to end this week's list, we've got the Top Down's debut album, Rough Roads.
While the drums are heavy and the guitars bang on, the lo-fi production on songs like "The Tunnel," "She's Gone" and "Primitive and Raw." Meanwhile, "Wanna Be Alone" has that melodic folkiness to it. Then there's the guitar-led "Rocks to My Head." Singing about the ups and downs of life and relationships, the 12-track record offers up the right vibe for someone looking for some good indie rock sounds.
