Lorde Makes Her Glorious Return to 'SNL' While 'Game Of Thrones' Draws to a Close

After a long winter, spring is finally here. As the chilly weather begins to warm — for everyone other than the Northern half of the Continental US — people’s spirits are rising, and for the first time in a long time, we’re excited for what’s being offered in the form of new music and entertainment. Here’s what you missed over the weekend.

The Lorde Giveth

When Pure Heroine was released, we couldn’t get enough of “Royals” and “Glory and Gore.” But after taking some much needed time off to enjoy life away from the limelight of Hollywood, Lorde returned with from her hiatus with a few surprises up her sleeve. Not only had the singer-songwriter secretly been working on new music, but the New Zealand native gifted fans with two new tracks and the announcement of her sophomore album, Melodrama, available on June 16. The proclamation was huge: Lorde hasn’t released a studio album since 2013 and the fresh tunes are the first solo projects she’s debuted since her contribution of “Yellow Flicker Beat” to The Hunger Games — Mockingjay: Part 1 soundtrack.

But the beloved Kiwi didn’t stop there. On Saturday, the brunette beauty made her headlining premiere — albeit second visit — to Saturday Night Live. For her opening song, she chose the lead single off of Melodrama, titled “Green Light.” Inspired by her breakup with longtime boyfriend, James Lowe, Lorde used the songwriting process as a catharsis for the complexities of relationships and the intense heartache she was braving at the time. For her second performance of the night, she sang “Liability,” the second single off of her highly anticipated album. Dressed in a white wedding gown, she sat close to her pianist and gave the live audience a softer rendition than the recorded version. Time away from the constant pressures of society have done Lorde good, and we’re excited to see what else Melodrama has to offer.

Winter is Coming...To An End

The creators of HBO’s Game of Thrones have been piling on the heartache since day one, in particular with their infamous “Hold The Door” episode (it still hurts), and now they’re adding to the torment once again. Loyal viewers patiently waited for six entire seasons to gain insight into the fascinating development of characters and to see how the intricate storylines played out, but with the promise of winter’s arrival only recently coming to fruition (after six years of waiting), the head honchos have announced that they’re throwing in the towel after the completion of the next two seasons. As if that wasn’t devastating enough, the eighth and final season will be limited to a mere six episodes...six! What are we going to do without our beloved Khaleesi?

The sad news was confirmed by showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss during their South by Southwest Film Festival panel, who were joined by Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark) and Maisie Williams (Arya Stark). “From the beginning we’ve wanted to tell a 70-hour movie. It will turn out to be a 73-hour movie, but it’s stayed relatively the same of having the beginning, middle and now we’re coming to the end.” On a happier note, as a final “Thank you” for Maisie William’s hard work, the cast and crew managed to swing a pretty spectacular surprise for her. It was supposed to remain a secret, but word somehow got out that British singer Ed Sheeran will be making a guest appearance during Season 7. Williams happens to be a huge fan of Sheeran’s, and the collaboration has been in the works for years, with the invite only recently being accepted by the “Shape of You” singer. Talk about having connections. We’ll be sad to see our favorite characters go, but the producers are more than ready to lay them to rest. “We argued over who got to kill Sansa,” said Benioff. Get ready to be re-acquainted with your favorite characters before they’re killed off and the show ends — July 16 is just around the corner.

Box Office Hits and Disappearances

Just as Tom Hiddleston was able to survive his brief relationship with Taylor Swift, his new movie, King Kong: Skull Island, was able to survive its opening weekend. Not only did the ongoing story of the world’s most recognizable, troublesome and fictitious primate (next to Curious George) end in the No. 1 spot after bringing in over $61 million in its first weekend in US theaters for a grand total of $142.6 million worldwide, but it also surpassed runner-up Logan, with a troubled and tired Wolverine ending his second weekend at a beastly $430 million. Not bad for an opening weekend, considering Warner Bros. shelled out $185 million to produce the modern addition to the King Kong franchise.

Fans holding out for the Christmas 2018 release of the Avatar 2 will have their patience tested, as director James Cameron announced that he’s once again pushing back the release date — for the third time. The sequel to the heavily awarded, 2009 original was initially due to arrive in theaters December 2014, with each subsequent release taking place every five years. However, Cameron isn’t prepared to release the second in the series of five films before the timing is right and the progression of each movie makes sense. During his interview with The Toronto Star, he said:

"It's not an unreasonable time frame if you think about it. It took us four-and-a-half years to make one movie and now we're making four. We're full tilt boogie right now. This is my day job and pretty soon we'll be 24/7. We're pretty well designed on all our creatures and sets. It's pretty exciting stuff. I wish I could share with the world. But we have to preserve a certain amount of showmanship and we're going to draw that curtain when the time is right."
